Gül upset about NATO's rejection of MacedoniaANKARA – Turkish Daily News President Abdullah Gül Friday criticized the rejection of Macedonia's request to join NATO because of a row with Greece over its name. Gül emphasized that the problem stemmed from the lack of Greek recognition of Macedonia's constitutional name saying, whereas to date NATO's enlargement policy has depended on performance. Speaking to reporters at Ankara's Esenboğa Airport upon his return from the NATO summit, Gül said that NATO went beyond its enlargement criteria for the first time and underlined that the bilateral problem was used against Macedonia in its bid to be a member of NATO. "We strongly support and hope that Macedonia will be invited to join NATO as soon as possible," he said. At last week's NATO summit in the Romanian capital of Bucharest, Albania and Croatia won invitations to become NATO members while Macedonia's request for an invitation to join NATO was blocked by Greece. Greece opposes the former Yugoslav republic's bid for NATO membership because Macedonia is also the name of a northern Greek province, and Greece contends it implies a territorial claim. Turkey recognizes Macedonia by its constitutional name.

Good for Turkey. When the Kurds want independence I am sure that Greece will know what to do. I must thank the Turks for giving us such clear vision.
