Honest Croatian politician is not a breath of fresh air
Vancouver SunJuly 4, 2009
With all the shenanigans and empty promises that regularly emanate from Ottawa, and Victoria, and Vancouver, we'd give just about anything to find an honest politician.
Well, maybe not.
You see, it turns out there is an honest politician, and he's not exactly a breath of fresh air. But then again, the people who elected him seem to like him just fine.
The people in this case are the townsfolk of Prolozac, Croatia, and the honest politician is the small town's new mayor, Josko Risa.
In a decidedly unconventional, but brutally honest campaign, Risa charged to victory using the slogan "All for me -- nothing for you."
In explaining his unusual approach, Risa told the Croatian Times "I just told them the truth.
"This town will be like my family business. If I get a little something, so do they."
Perhaps that's why he also adopted the slightly friendlier, but but no less honest, alternative slogan: "It's definitely going to be better for me, but will be the same for you."
And perhaps that's why Risa enjoys such popularity.
As Prolozac resident Ivan Vjisnic put it "We're going to get ripped off no matter who takes over.
"At least he is being honest and up front about it.
"And he has said that if things get better for him they will get better for us."
Now let that be a lesson for all aspiring politicians everywhere.
Honesty really is the best policy.
Even if you are planning to be corrupt.
