Greek cow violates Turkish-Greek border
While airspace and nautical disputes between Turkey and Greece are far from unheard of, Turkish authorities are now dealing with the unexpected case of a cow traveling from its hometown in Greece across the Turkish border.
According to reports, a cow from the Greek town of Kastanies, just across from the Pazarkule border gate, crossed into Turkey by wading across the Arda River. Turkish soldiers on patrol at the border remanded the cow to the custody of Pazarkule immigration officials when it arrived on the Turkish shore. The officials said the first priority in dealing with the animal was ensuring that it carried no viruses or diseases and as a result dispatched the cow to the Edirne Agricultural Department, where it is under quarantine for 21 days.

Edirne Governor Mustafa Büyük released a statement this week on the cow case, saying that Greek authorities have so far been unhelpful in the process of deporting the cow once its quarantine is complete, though Turkish authorities notified them that the cow can indeed be repatriated to Greece. “The cow traveling from Greece to Turkey is illegal. We've notified the Greek authorities that we can return the cow, but so far we've received no response. The regional agriculture directorate has put the cow into quarantine. If it is not taken back when its quarantine is complete, then it will become state property, and the resolution of this case will be determined accordingly,” Büyük said.
