Turkish journalists stopped by Greek coast guard in Med
Four Turkish journalists were stopped on Tuesday near the Greek island of Meis as they tried to film Greek troops on an uninhabited island in the Mediterranean, Turkish and Greek officials have said.
"Some Turkish journalists trying to take photographs near Meis were stopped by Greek coast guard units, who asked the journalists why they were there," a statement from the Turkish Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday. The statement dismissed earlier reports that the journalists were detained by the Greek coast guard and said the journalists returned to the Turkish Mediterranean town of Kaþ following "contact between Turkish and Greek coast guard boats."
The Anatolia news agency quoted one of the journalists, Bekir Öner Þan, as saying on Tuesday evening that the group had been detained near an uninhabited island called Karaada in Turkish and Rho in Greek, off the coast of Kaþ, before they were released. The group had attempted to film Greek military personnel on the island, Anatolia said.
The Greek authorities also denied the group had been detained. The Greek coast guard said on Tuesday that it had stopped four Turkish journalists and the captain of their boat near Rho.
A Greek patrol boat intercepted the journalists as they neared Rho and checked their identification without boarding the boat, Greek officials said. "Today at 17:35 (local time) we spotted a Turkish boat near the island of Rho," Theodoros Rentzeperis, chief of the Greek coast guard, said in a statement issued by the Greek Marine Ministry.
"We went to check it, and after that we asked them to leave Greek waters immediately. The Turkish boat left at 18:10 (local time). In the boat there were four people who declared that they were journalists ... as well as the captain, all Turks," the statement said.
Rho is near the Dodecanese island of Kastelorizo, Greece's eastern-most island, located 1.3 kilometers (0.9 miles) off the Turkish coast. News reports in the Turkish media earlier in the week said although the uninhabited island was one of the islands that must remain demilitarized under international agreements, the Greek military had dispatched troops there. The four journalists were trying to film Greek military personnel on the island.
A Greek Foreign Ministry official, however, said Rho's territory is not in dispute. The Turkish Foreign Ministry statement did not refer to the island's status.
Historic rivals Turkey and Greece nearly went to war in 1996 over control of the uninhabited island of Kardak. Relations have since improved significantly, and Greece now backs its Muslim neighbor's bid to join the European Union.
But nearly a decade of negotiations over their territorial disputes, as well as over the divided island of Cyprus, have yielded little progress toward settlement.

Isn't exaggerated all this ? How many Greek flags are waved in Albania ? 1.000 ? Municipalities , churches etc. More ? To start a diplomatic incident for a flag ?
