One of the most important politicians in Croatian history, Savka Dabcevic-Kucar, passed away on August 6 in her Zagreb apartment at the age of 86.
Savka will be remembered for heading a movement called the Croatian Spring since 1971. Her doctorate thesis was entitled “J.M. Keynes – Theorist Of National Capitalism”, which made her famous as one of the first female economy doctorate holders in Croatia.
Despite great political engagement, Savka never stopped working at the Faculty of Economy, where he headed the post-graduate studies “Economy of the Commune”.
Savka Dabcevic-Kucar was born on December 6, 1923 in the island of Korcula, into a family of Croats who originated from Boka Kotorska. Her father Antun was an attorney and was also noted in national history when he burned a Hungarian flag with a group of friends anent the visit of Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I to Zagreb in 1895.
As an eager anti-fascist, she aided the People`s Liberation Movement since 1941, but did not get involved with the organisation. She became a partisan during the mass uprising in Dalmatia, in September 1943. She became a member of the Croatian Communist Party in December 1943.
Leading person of the Croatian Spring Movement
In December 1971 Tito held a party leadership conference in Karadjordjevo, Serbia, and publicly turned against the Croatian Spring. (The Croatian Spring was a political movement from the early 1970s that called for greater rights for Croatia which was then part of Yugoslavia as well as democratic and economic reforms). This led to Dabcevic-Kucar`s removal from the Croatian Communist Party on April 12, 1972 and, ultimately, from public life. After 1971, she was persistently persecuted, criticised and scrutinised, constantly opposing the governing system. She gathered Croatian Spring supporters, dissidents and people who countered the regime.
Invited by the representatives of the Croatian Social-Liberal Party and the HKDS, she joined the Coalition of People's Accord as a non-party person, together with several prominent individuals. The coalition united many Croatian centre parties so that anti-communist votes would not be lost during the first free general election is Croatia.
In October 1990, she formed the Croatian People`s Party (HNS) of democratic centre. She was elected the party`s president in January 1991 for the first time, followed by two consecutive terms. She withdrew from the function in November 1994 and remained an honourable HNS president until this day.
