Man faces extradition to Hungary after Toronto arrestAugust 19, 2009 TORONTO — A Roma man wanted in Hungary on decade-old extortion and robbery charges was arrested in Toronto Wednesday morning and is being held for extradition, police have confirmed. The Toronto Police Fugitive Squad apprehended Adolf Horvath, 52, at approximately 8 a.m., after he had avoided extradition for more than a year. He has been the subject of a Canadian warrant since disappearing and failing to turn himself in on an extradition order dated March 20, 2008. Horvath is wanted in Hungary on several criminal charges dating back to 1997. In 2003, after learning he was in Canada, Hungarian authorities applied to have him extradited, but Horvath disappeared before he could be returned to his home country. Horvath had claimed he fled to Canada with his wife and son in 1999 after a group of neo-Nazis stabbed and beat him in his home country. Citizenship and Immigration Canada investigated his case in 2004 and allowed him to stay in Canada, determining he was a “person in need of protection.” The Justice Department later sided with the Hungarian government and issued an extradition order. www.canada.com/news/faces+extradition+Hungary+after+Toronto+arrest/1910272/story.html
