With 275 Migrants. By THE NEW YORK TIMES Published: November 12, 2007 ATHENS, Nov. 11 — The Greek coast guard on Sunday rescued 275 people believed to be illegal migrants crammed on a Turkish cargo ship that nearly capsized in rough seas southwest of the Greek coast, a Greek coast guard spokeswoman said. The people on the ship, including dozens of women and children from Iraq, had been traveling for 13 days, en route to Italy, when the captain of the vessel issued a distress signal that sent two Greek coast guard frigates and a tugboat to their rescue in the Ionian Sea, said the spokeswoman, Aspa Popadopoulou. The captain, who is Turkish, and his 14-member crew were arrested by Greek authorities, and they are facing charges linked to human smuggling. The Greek news media reported that some of the immigrants said they had paid $2,000 each for their passage to Italy and $1,000 for each child. www.nytimes.com/2007/11/12/world/europe/12greece.html?ref=world

Turk is here and watches over you. Yeah, you could save a ship to distort the truth, but it would mean nothing as long as you continue to kill poor people. Immigrant shot dead
A Greek border guard shot and killed a migrant trying to cross illegal into northwestern Greece on November 8. The victim, who had entered the country and tried to run away from officers who ordered him to stop, had crossed either from the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia or Albania with a group of 10 other people, police said.
"Ordered by the border guards to stop for checks, nine people stopped but two ran away," police said in a statement. "A chase followed and one of them was arrested while the other was shot and seriously injured by a border guard." The migrant, whose sex or nationality had not been released by police, died in hospital shortly after. Police said they were investigating the incident while the guard had been arrested and his gun confiscated.
In the last five years almost 400,000 people attempted to enter Greece illegally, the government has said. Human rights groups have accused Greece of tolerating inhumane conditions at its migrant detention centres and of police brutality during arrests and detention of migrants. The government launched an investigation late last month into a report highlighting violations of migrants' basic human rights by Greek authorities and accusations of regular torture including mock executions. www.athensnews.gr/athweb/nathens.prnt_article?e=C&f=&t=01&m=A04&aa=4Illegal immigrant shot dead in Greece; stabbing probed

ATHENS, Greece (AP) - A Greek border guard was arrested after an illegal immigrant was shot dead in northern Greece on Thursday, and authorities investigated claims an Afghan teenager was stabbed by harbor police.
The 45-year-old Albanian was fatally shot in the back during a chase by Greek border guards, on the rugged frontier with the Balkan country, police said. Greek authorities arrested another 10 men who illegally entered the country with the man.
Greece is facing an unusually high influx of illegal immigrants, mostly by sea, accompanied by embarrassing claims that coast guard personnel systematically mistreated boat people heading for the country's eastern islands.
A 14-year-old Afghan claimed Thursday that an officer stabbed him with a knife in the western port of Patras when he tried to escape arrest, the Merchant Marine Ministry said. The boy had been hiding in a truck waiting to board a ferry for Italy. He was hospitalized with minor injuries, the ministry said. Merchant Marine Minister George Voulgarakis called for «exemplary punishment» should any officer be found responsible for the alleged attack. A Patras prosecutor ordered a separate investigation.
Greece has denied mistreating illegal immigrants, thousands of whom enter the country every year, mainly on rickety boats from the nearby Turkish coast, to seek a better life in the European Union. The government says illegal immigration is a major problem for the Mediterranean country, which has a 13,000-kilometer (8,000-mile) coastline dotted with thousands of islands.
According to Merchant Marine Ministry figures released Thursday, more than 7,000 migrants were detained so far this year for illegally entering the country by sea _ double the total for the whole of 2006. Another 1,260 migrants were caught trying to leave the country illegally, while coast guard personnel arrested a total of 337 suspected people-smugglers.
The ministry also said an estimated 2,873 migrants had been «deterred from entering» the country by sea. A ministry spokeswoman said this referred to migrant boats turning back at the sight of Greek patrol craft. Last month, the ministry launched a probe into claims by a German refugee rights group that patrols regularly engage in «life-threatening maneuvers» to deter migrant boats from entering Greek waters. The Pro Asyl group also alleged that in one case a migrant was tortured with a mock execution and by being ducked in a bucket of water.
Human rights groups have also accused Greek authorities of blocking non-economic migrants from seeking refugee status. Greece has denied the allegations. www.pr-inside.com/illegal-immigrant-shot-dead-in-greece-r291438.htm

From reading those articles, 1 immigrant died and someone was shot. The individual who was shot wasn't necessarily a mgrant more likely he was a trafficker and deserved to get shot for being engaged in human trafficking. Plus, isn't it common sense to not run when your stopped by border guards unless you have something to hide.
Furthermore, the claims by certain human rights groups should be looked at with suspicion. Most such groups never varify statements and they often published unsubstantiated claims as fact. Not even that the illegal migrants have a big reason to lie since it is often common practice in the EU to give asylum to an illegal migrant who has been significantly mistreated by authorities.

They are bombing and destroying their countries and then they wonder why these people are being forced to flee their homeland.

Oh yeah like the Anti Cancer council has shares with the tobacco companies and at the same time attacks them for their practices You mean that some criminals make money just like there are criminals in Greece who earn money by recruiting illegal migrants. It has nothing to do with how the Greek governments handle such humanitarian issues, doesn't it?
