Yep, because the US realized that different states have different economies, differing cultures, differing social structures and thus the laws necessary for NY are the same as for Oklahoma. Yet at the same time, both Oklahoma and New York feel part of a single union even if they do recognize that there are differences between both.

...It is so perfect that different States have different Laws.
Soyuz son, of course they have different laws, that's why they called states. Each has his own constitution with his constitutional body that regulates the life of the given state that it is not in contradiction with the Uninion's Constitution. Your EU if happens will be the same. each member country will modify his constitution to not contradict the EU's constitution, but do not think the countries itself will not have their own constitutions and legislative bodies to regulate their internal life. Look at Germany for example; each German state has his own separate constitution under that complies with the German constitution.
Do you want a dumb-ass from Reykjavik to regulate your local life in let say Athens?! Joining together into a union and deciding what the rules of the new family would be doesn't mean you do not have rules of your own in your original family.
As for the balance of the power inside the union USA has followed the formula of each state equal voting power. Size doesn't matter :-) Each state is represented with 2 senators in the senate the highest room of the US parliament. Eu it seams wants to follow the tricky formula of representatives related to the size of the country. that means Germany 18 votes Greece 3. Chity deal i think if they fall for that, it appears we will se a copy of the European Music Festival voting process on the EU parliament if that happens.

What matters is the standard of living and not whether the "country" is better. China is the second economy in the world, I don't think many people would envy the Chinese though.
