Three times in real life now I've guessed that the language being spoken is French and it turned out to be Albanian. Though it doesn't sound French when I listen to it on the internet. Now that is a massive compliment to my mind since French is recognized (& I agree) the most beautiful sounding language in the world. Do Albanians ever get this or is this something weird that I've just thought? Someone once told me that "Albanian is the most borrowed language."

French is basically Latin language with CELTIC accent so basically Albanian accent sounds Celtic like.

The only reason why people think Albanian sounds like French is because they hear the Albanian ç, other than that... the languages arent all that similar.
And I already have a topic on the Albanian language open, you can see what I posted yourself...

Not only it sounds french... some words that I read here I can guess them correctly by me speaking French.I do the same for Portuguese,Spanish and Italian... I would say your language sounds somewhat like Portuguese..there are too many words with the 'sh' in them.

I've heard from people that Albanian sounds French. But I think the issue here is that our language is so unique and most people haven't heard it being spoken, and so they need to compare it to smth else, when in reality it has its own unique sound ... I mean, nobody goes and says "French sounds like x language" -- it simply sounds French.

Both French and Geg Albanian have nasal vowels, that's why it may be confused with French to the untrained ear, "on" (fr) = "ô" (alb), "an" (fr) = "â" (alb), "in" (fr) = "ê" (alb) but french has a caractersitic "r" sound

it doesn't sound French at all...some similarities with Portugues or Herbaic "sh" sound as canaris said...
...many people thinks it is Yugoslav...
but If you hear the arberesh talking, the albanian language can sound very italian...just put the accent on the last voyell...

I have always found portuguese to be an extremely ugly language...but I did never notice the similarity to albanian...now it all makes sense somewhat. ;D
