Then their form would have been different. The way they're formed shows they entered early on, as they share the same phonetic changes as other Latin words that entered into our language during the Roman period.
The Orthodox community does borrow alot from Greek. But original meanings like those above are uniformly Latin borrowed.
This is Hammond's theory and at first sight it seems plausible, but then there are many errors. He says for instance that the warriors who crossed Vjosa and into Epirus, were 'Gegs'. I don't know what exactly he means by this, but it's wrong; these same people, or a percentage of them, continued moving south (the Arvanites) ... he calls them Gegs too. This is absurd, and I don't know where he based this thought on. He also doesn't tackle the matter of toponyms like Vlore which show continuity ...

Its true, none can be 100% sure. If i remember correctly he talks about a mix of Tosk and Geg fares combined with a portion of Vlachs. In the tradition of Arvanites, their origin was from Arvanitia. That is the Toskeria (not Laberia, and of course not Chamouria), and not the Geg area. Its true that if the Geg element was important it would had left some traditions.

Arvanitia (Arberia) is northern-central Albania. The area encompassing today Kruja, Tirana, Durres, Elbasan and Mati-Dibra area. The Arvanites' placement of Arvanitia is southern Albania is just their own misplaced desire to be linked with us Tosks since it makes them less alienated from Greece.
Oh and Laberia is connected to Arberia...

Actually he says they are Gegs with minor Tosk influences, not an even mix of both;
"Albanian settlements in Greek lands maintained their own language and their own dialect of that language for many centuries. The great majority spoke the Geg dialect which is characteristic of Albanians north of the river Shkumbi and of the districts Metohija and Kossovo in southern Yugoslavia; but some settlements for instance those near Lake Copais in Boeotia, spoke the Tosk dialect, which is native to the area between the Shkumbi and the Aous in general terms (see Map 14)."
I don't understand what he bases this on, and it shoots a hole in his credibility in my eyes. The only thing Arvanitika has closer with Geg are certain sounds which Tosk lost/altered and Arvanitika preserved because it broke off before they occured, especially involving the 'kl' or 'klj' sound which in Tosk evolved into 'q' (roughly pronounced as 'tj' but not quite, a soft 'ch' sound). But that's it, and it doesn't mean Arvanitika is Geg.

As far as I understand, that is just classicists' and linguists' way of understanding with what type of declension they're dealing with. But those words above are from the Latin accusative, not genitive. For instance French 'mont' comes from the accusative 'montem', not genitive 'montis' ... or atleast this is what I read. The reason is because such words were often heard as objects in sentences, like "they climbed the mountain" rather than "the mountain climbed them" -- hence they were fossilized in that form rather than in the nominative. Having said this though, I dont see why 'montem' couldnt come from the genitive 'montis' as opposed to 'montem', though linguists probably have a reason to believe it was accusative, perhaps based on accentuation.
