This is several years old but fitting. He already has a summer home in Greece. Also....a whole bunch of foreigners on Greece.

She was telling me that Rita raised her kids and didn't send them off to a daycare or a nanny. I mentioned that my kids go to my mother but not my mother-in-law because 'she's American'. I figured she'd understand but she looked vissibly annoyed. Oh well....

The comment you made, 'because she's American", tells me you have issues with Americans, that is, all Americans. So you slam your mother-in-law because she is American, yet you do not slam Mr. Hanks. Kind of weird, don't you think?

She doesn't have issues with her MIL.... she just wants her kid to grow up Greek.

Kind of weird, don't you think? Yes, you are a total brain. I don't have problems with Americans. I do not however agree with the "general" family values of the AVERAGE American. ...and I also want my kids to be Greek, learn Greek language, dance Greek dances and EAT a REAL HOME COOKED MEAL instead of chicken nuggets.

PS listen to waht Hanks says.....when you marry a Greek you become Greek yourself (by proxy). People are usually drawn to the average Greek family. My own husband would rather hang out with my family than his. What does that tell you?

I figured she'd understand but she looked vissibly annoyed. Oh well.... Maybe you should of worded your comment as: "I want my children to grow up Greek, learn the language and culture. This I can not get from an American" It would not be misleading by making it seem as if you dislike Americans. Plus you would not have pissed her off.

arxhi...
this is an important question for Calliope and I think us Greeks would like to know why she married a man who showed no respect for his own family?
now, let this question stand for Calliope....
What made you choose a man who needed your family to show him what it meant to have a family or a sense of self and history "by proxy" from your family? Other than your personal feelings, you are a smart person and obviously you discerned this part of your mate, why would a smart woman like yourself marry such a person, who showed little respect for his angry mom or his family? Was it that negative an experience for him to have chosen your family over his own?

That's the thing it ain't about her. It's about Tom Hanks this topic and she is entitled to her opinions. Shows your true intentions doesn't it. Women ? Stay on topic and everyone has the right to their opinions regarding this topic without being slammed.

Fact, Rita's mom was born in Albania and her Father's original name was Ibrahimoff, he was raised in Bulgaria and lived in Turkey. So much for both of them being 100% Greek.

^ Why didn't you post your opinion rather than attack a persons life style and bring in their family Sheeeeshhh I miss those days when women fought in real life I wasn't attacking her lifestyle. It mattered nothing to Calliope's messages and mean strokes to GreekSlav. She accused him of so many things that are not true and she brought in stuff about his lifestyle and choices. Calliope opened the door to this type of criticism and it asks the same questions of her choices she makes public on this thread about her husband's mother and that shows clearly what sort of person she married. A man with little self esteem and esteem for his own heritage/family. And, those same questions are asked of him through her as to why he chooses her Greek family to show him what it means to have family or a sense of belonging to someone else's history. As far as we read about GreekSlav, he shows both his heritages-mom and father, in his own nick and he doesn't care what others think. He is proud of both his ancestries and he is proud of his mate's ancestry. He neither needs his wife's ancestry, or her pride in her history, to make him feel rounded and a total person, with his own sense of belonging to his own family and his own history. He chose his wife as an equal and he is proud of her and her ancestry, as well as his own and he shows respect for both his and his wife's ancestry, and he hides none of that to anyone here. And, all of the Greeks who criticize him for their own stupid selfish reasons, show not even .001% of GS's pride in all the lines of his ancestry, including the one he chose to share with in his wife's. All of you owe GreekSlav an apology because he actually does a great service to Greeks by showing what a truly powerful man, who stands on his own choices and history, can accomplish with the upbringing he had and the way he carries himself on this board, proud of all those who are part of his family/history and the role modeling he presents for all of us to follow. He is mature enough to show his love for his own and those he chose to share with, his love. This is what all mankind should aspire to role modeling in their lives, for their descendants and neighbors.
