The end of May will mark the end of the buzzing club football season as both Champions League and UEFA Cup champions become known, but we will yet see some more football in the first half of 2009. As the national teams refocus on their respective 2010 World Cup qualifying campaigns, Balkans will be swept over by another wave of excitement, with Serbia, Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina all on steady routes to South Africa.
The official webpage of football’s world governing body – www.fifa.com – deals with the issue and announces a hot summer with the headline “The Best of Balkan”.
- “The most impressive team of the qualifying campaign is Serbia, leaders of Group 7 ahead of world vice-champions France. Serbia have conceded only five goals in five games, while the biggest praise for the achievement goes to world-class defenders Nemanja Vidic and Branislav Ivanovic,” says the FIFA article.
Bosnian and Croatian attackers have taken German Bundesliga by storm. Bosnia-Herzegovina internationals Edin Dzeko and Zvjezdan Misimovic of Wolfsburg top the lot, as well as the Croatian trio – Ivica Olic and Mladen Petric (Hamburger SV) and Ivan Rakitic (Schalke 04). Also, one of the key players in the magnificent autumn run of Hoffenheim has been Bosnia-Herzegovina’s Vedad Ibisevic, who has been injured the entire spring.
- “Which duo is the best in Balkans? Do our hearts go with the solid defensemen Nemanja Vidic of Manchester United and Branislav Ivanovic of Chelsea, strikers Dzeko and his colleague Misimovic, or perhaps the goal-scoring partnership of Olic – Petric,” wonders the writer of the article, reflecting on the success of the neighbouring nation.
- “Bosnia-Herzegovina are pushing through the qualifications surprisingly well. After six games they are in second position behind European champions Spain and favoured Turkey. Imagine just where Bosnia-Herzegovina might even be know if their key striker Ibisevic hadn’t injured himself, having previously scored 18 goals in 17 games for Hoffenheim. Croatian spearheads are Olic and Petric. The Hamburger SV duo have scored 19 goals between themselves and helped the team be one of the best in Bundesliga this season. They are doing well in the qualifications, placed second behind England.”
