Number of prisoners in Serbia has risen by 60 percent over the past five years by OfficialWire NewsDesk BELGRADE, SERBIA — (OfficialWire) — 04/21/09 — More than 10,000 inmates are locked in Serbia's prisons -- about 4,000 beyond their capacity -- a Justice Ministry official said. The Council of Europe's committee against torture in jails has reprimanded Serbia for its overcrowded prisons, the Serbian Radio-Television RTS said Tuesday. The Serbian Ministry of Justice said another 5,500 convicts are waiting for space in prisons to begin serving ther jail terms. A new prison building is to be completed by the end of this year within the Padinska Skela penitentiary complex on the outskirts of Belgrade, and the government plans to build another four prisons across Serbia, said Slobodan Homen, state secretary in the Justice Ministry. The number of prisoners in Serbia has risen by 60 percent over the past five years. About 2,000 prison guards watch about 10,000 inmates. The capacity problem could be improved by introducing a system of home detention and alternative sanctions, Homen said. www.officialwire.com/main.php?action=posted_news&rid=1608&catid=824

At least were not like America where more then 1% of the adult population is in jail.
Or where the incarceration rate is almost 5 times that of the rest of the world on average.

Most Balkan prisons are having trouble logistically. Not enough money and too much crime... Bulls**t. The Balkans are safer then western europe. It;s because the Balkans don't give a f**k about prisoner rights unlike retards in Britain and the west who are surprised when they release paedophiles and they molest kids again. You won't less prisoners in Balkan priosners then start executing paedophiles and murderers, or if that's too extreme put bar code their fucking foreheads so that they're fucking excluded from society. Balkans safer than Western Europe – UN Wednesday, 25 February 2009 09:17 The UN claims that after a decade of wars in the Balkans, the area is now considered safer than Western Europe. The UN supports in a report based on U.N. and national police data, that the levels of crime against people and property in the Balkan area are lower than elsewhere in Europe; however organized crime and drunk trafficking are still evident. The report covered nice countries: Albania, Bosnia, Croatia, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Serbia, Romania, and Bulgaria. As a condition for accession in the EU, the candidate members have to improve the rule of law, governance and other reforms. The EU considers organised crime and corruption to be an obstacle in the visa-free travel to the EU for Balkan citizens and foreign investment in the area, and if the Balkan countries want to keep moving forward towards the EU, the situation must change. The report indicates the number of organized crime in the Balkan area to have declined significantly from 1998 to 2006. Additionally, after the Serbia’s signature of the pre-accession pact with the EU in April, western investors have showed new interest in venturing business in the area. With the full implementation of the pre-accession pact with EU, the trade ties between the Balkan countries and Western Europe are expected to be improved. High crime in Britain? Go to the Balkans Posted By: Harry de Quetteville at May 29, 2008 at 23:34:07 [General] Posted in: Foreign Correspondents Tags:View More Albania, Balkans, Bosnia, Bulgaria, crime, Romania , Serbia, Slovenia Feel threatened in Belgravia? Move to Bosnia. Getting mugged in Manchester? Head to Moldova. Too much knife crime in Aldwych, Albania's the answer. Greater stability has made the Balkans safer than Western Europe These are the results of a big UN study into crime in the Balkans - released today. The Balkans are now safer than Western Europe. I've written a piece for the paper tomorrow but wanted to link into the full report here, where it is available for download. It's a surprise and good news in equal, huge, measure. Of course it's sod's law that on the day the report is released, a loon in Bosnia kills six in a gun spree. But that shouldn't alter the basic message - the Balkans may still be unstable, particularly in Kosovo, but for most there, standards of education are high and levels of violence and crime are low. Can we say the same?

I don't understand why prisons are still in use since camps are much cheaper.

Crime in the Balkans is generally not large enough to be commented on, but its there. whether its petty drug dealers or the various violence that occurs when people get angry.

WOW I didn't know that. That's a bit of a contradiction, US being the land of the free and all that. Any links to stats? First heard about in an eocnomics class in 07. Why the U.S. unemployment rate is usually some 1.5% below most other industrialized states. [While Canada was at the low rate of 5%, U.S. was claiming 2.5%]. I also read about it in an economist article in 06. Anyways, the wiki page has some good links on the subject: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Incarceration_in_the_United_States#Incarceration_rate.
