Bosnia 'Has Huge Oil Deposits' | 21 May 2008 | Sarajevo _ Bosnia and Herzegovina straddles a potentially huge oil pool, a Bosnian expert claims.
Dean of the Faculty of Technology and Mining in the northern town of Tuzla, Abdulah Basic, told local media on Wednesday that some 500 million tonnes of oil could be located in several locations in the northern Bosnia as well as further south in Herzegovina in a the depth of between 4,000 and 6,000 metres.
His comments were triggered by an incident on May 12, when a man digging a water well in the village of Kadrici near Tuzla, hit a pocket of natural gas. The gas ignited creating a column of fire which according to eyewitnesses was at least 20 metres high.
In the past, local media have occasionally touched upon the possibility of oil deposits under Bosnia and Herzegovina. According to several Bosnian experts, British Petroleum, BP and American Oil Company, AMOCO, now also part of BP, were interested in potential oil resources in Bosnia even before its 1992-1995 war.
In cooperation with these two companies, one of the biggest Bosnian construction firms, Energoinvest, carried out a research which proved the existence of oil pools in the northern region of Posavina, as well as in several locations in the south.
Basic says that Energoinvest still has the original report which indicates that Bosnia may have oil resources as big as Saudi Arabia or Iraq.
Yet even after the end of the war, neither local governments nor international companies showed interest to continue with the research. However this may be changing with the recent skyrocketing of oil and food prices on global markets.
“First barrels of oil from Bosnia could be excavated as soon as the next 15 years, under the condition that local governments have an interest in this,” Basic told local media. www.balkaninsight.com/en/main/news/10359/#add_comment

Umm yeah, great, another thing that Croats, Serbs and Bosniaks can fight over.
How much is 500 million tonnes? How many litres/gallons??
Uhh bulls**t, Energoinvest is a Bosnian company with Bosnian interests.. of course they'll say that to try to get investment in the country.

3 bln oils. But it another way, enough to supply te world for 50 days. Not a big find. but that amount of gas can probably supply BiH for 10-15 years, possibly more. Plus they don't have to buy gas from Russia and won't freeze to death like they did this past year.

For a country that needs revenue, anything is a big find.

If it was true there would be drillers on mass out there now (bear in mind this article is from 2008), and Silajdzic would sell his own right hand to have the Yanks involved (unfortunately not for the good of the people but to undermine RS) a deal would have been done long time ago.

If it was true there would be drillers on mass out there now (bear in mind this article is from 2008), and Silajdzic would sell his own right hand to have the Yanks involved (unfortunately not for the good of the people but to undermine RS) a deal would have been done long time ago. If one reads the articles it's not just in Fed, several that exist the oil fields in Bosnia are jost not in Tuzla they're present tghrogh out north west [[Posavina Canton, Tuzla Canton, Semberija in RS, Doboj Region of RS] - allegedly theirs also some potential fields in the western area and Hercegovina (the latter in both halves)). It isn't develop because: a. the figure mentioned is likely the highest possible amount. Chances are it's smaller. b. the price of oil has gone down. c. it's comparatively expensive to drill in mountainous areas (Basilicata, the region of South Italy si poor it has no mafia tradition has 25 billion barrels, but becuase of the nature of the rock and mountainous nature of the area it has thus far been unprofitable) d. Te buyers of Bosanski Brod refinery in RS likely have the drilling rights to any oil found in RS (which is likely in these fields). e. If federation tried to develop this it could conflict with the claims in RS and would likely cause a feud bwtween the cantons in question and the federation government. About 20 year. But one is foolish to believe it is Bosnia. Like 3/4 of this amount will be exported, Bosnia will only have a five year supply of use. This will have no great effect on imports. Given how small the amount is no refineries will be built, meaning this will all go to Italy (the most likely market) and the bulk of oil and it's derivatives will be continue to be imported. Bosnia will make concessions, less taxes. ?Menaing few money will come in. The profits of a relatively minor canadian, malaysian or Russian firms will increase. Bosnia will get very little use for this. May be 2,000 jobs secured for 20 years. Something like .1% less unemployment.
