I dont think Greeks had time to burn the city. Lets be honest here...they were running for their lives. Turks were in a frenzy...they were being beaten and then we lost the initiative. They came back with a vengeance. In war nothing makes sense...so its no surprise the turks would burn down the city. Its not like its a first time or something.. Turks did not burn a single city in Balkans or Caucasus. It is not Turkish custom. When a city is conquered, Turks tend to settle in nice houses deserted rather than burning them. When the Turks retreat, they always think it is temporary situation, so they leave their properties intact with the hope of finding it as they left. In fact, malicious burning to destroy property is clearly a Greek custom, even experienced in modern Greece in the 21st Century. Similarly, it was the Armenian and Rum bandits which burned the city of Izmir back in 1922 as they did not want to leave anything to the prevailing Turks.

If it was Greeks and Armenians who did it.....a big bravo to them. They did the right thing by not granting anything to the mongol invaders. But I doubt it was Greeks and Armenians...you say burning down a city is no turkish "custom"...but massacring thousands of civilists is a turkish custom? You want to tell us the Turks have more respect for houses than lifes? Besides take into consideration that many of the soldiers were Kurds...Kurds are very barbarian people...they were the ones that performed the Armenian genocide predominantly....they burnt down Smirni...and Ankara...will be their next destination...

The Greeks and Armenians preparing to evacuate Izmir were perhaps hundred times more angry than you are. Of course, they did not want to leave anything to the Mongols. That is why, they set everything on fire.

Greeks and Armenians who evacuated the city because of the mongols cetes... believed that they will return, everyone though this. They couldn't believe that they will loose their homes and 3000 years old Greek fatherland, none could burn his house, the hordes did it...without second thought.

Wow I didnt know my words are proofs.
You know very well that its disputed who set the fires...but most scientists are of the opinion that the Turks did it. So it doesnt matter what you believe oz...just because you made the mistake to burn down the pearl of the Aegean sea till then it doesnt mean you have to blame us for it in order to salve your conscience.
I say it again I dont care much who burnt it down...the city was factually destroyed by the Turks by massacring and expelling its native population...and not by setting the fires..

When the Ottomans conquered Constantinople, they were going to destroy Haghia Sophia, but the Sultan fell in love with and ordered that the church not be destroyed, but turned into a mosque. Turkics have a reputation for destruction, just like their kinsmen, the Mongolos Hence,Turk=barbarian.

They couldn't believe that they will loose their homes and 3000 years old Greek fatherland, none could burn his house, the hordes did it...without second thought. You are quite wrong. Armenians and Rums were sure of their final departure from Anatolia after whole of the Greek army got trashed by the Turkish troops. Two examples of what Greeks did in Western Anatolia: The Greek troops, with the help of reinforcements sent by General Nider, recaptured Aydýn on 4 July. The reoccupation of Aydýn was ordered by the Greek High Command in spite of the express orders of the representative of the Entente. The Greek authorities acted on orders received from Venizelos in Paris on 2 July. These orders prevented the representative of the Entente from intervening in the matter. Once in Aydýn, they set fire to the Turkish quarter situated in the western part of the town, where there were also some Greek factories. According to the Inter-Allied Inquiry Commission report, all the fires that were started between 29 June and 4 July most probably had destroyed two thirds of the city of Aydýn, which had a population of 20,000, including some 8000 Greeks.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Ayd%C4%B1nWhile fleeing the Nationalist armies, Greek troops took the time to arrange for the destruction of Manisa. The Greek and Armenian populations were given three days to evacuate the city prior to the date of the fire - September 6, 1922. The Jewish and Muslim residents were forced to remain. On the night of September 6, Manisa was in flames - lit by specially designated Greek civilians. The destruction by fire within the city limits was as follows: 2728 shops, nineteen hans, three factories, and five farms. A further 1740 village houses were burned in surrounding areas. Three thousand five hundred people perished in the fires and a further 855 were shot to death. The number of wounded was 167. Several young girls were taken by the retreating Greek troops (Turkiye’de Yunan Vahset ve Soykirim Girisimi (15 Mayis 1919 - 9 Eylul 1922), II nci Cilt, 13 Eylul 1921 - 9 Eylul 1922, Em.Kur.Alb.Talat Yalazan, Ankara 1994, pp. 152-153). In addition, Greek brigands killed and robbed the survivors as they were fleeing to the hills. Throughout the entire Greek occupation and retreat, 3716 people were killed, 77 were raped, 800 were taken by the troops, and 716 were tortured. Over 10,000 buildings were burned down, including several farms and more than 9,000 houses. Twenty-four villages were entirely destroyed by fire (Id. at p. 155)
Franklin-Boullion, in Manisa at the time of the Greek destruction, reported as follows:
“…Manisa used to be a town of 50,000 inhabitants and 11,000 houses. Today there are only one thousand houses left. The Greek commander directed the fire from his balcony while smoking a cigarette.” (Vakit, 3 October 1922.)en.baybak.com/the-greek-invasion-and-occupation-of-izmir-and-aegean-anatolia-1919-22.azrNevertheless, on their final route to Izmir, they kept on burning all cities they evacuated. Izmir was not an exception.

As he said...my words are proofs...and...he didnt argue anything...wow..my words are really reliable proofs...gay oz. Your words were the proof of the defeated Greek nationalism which did not hesiate to burn the properties of their fellow Rums in Izmir. After all, you certainly revealed the kind of mentality that was behind the destruction of Izmir and other Western Anatolian cities. Now you feel sorry for what you said and try to change the subject by attacking me personally, but truth hurts, Kastor. ;D

Jannisary do you know why Greece today is a more "forwarded" society than Turkey? Because we know abd we admitt our mistakes. There is self critisism in Greece (mainly due to a huge left wing political voters) and that is very good for a society. Do you know why Turkey today. .except 2-3 big city centers reminds of Turkey of 1920? There is no self critisism.. so.. "there is nothing on us to make better or to repair". Thats your problem. Look at you... "Greeks were drawn in the sea".. .regardless the fact the sea was red from blood.. and Med sea has not sharks. "Greeks burned down the gavur Izmir that we hate".... you understand the contradiction eh? "Greeks burned down big parts of land in deep Anatolia during the retreat" . .despite the fact that Greeks saw this place as non-Greek and they wanted to have a desert between Smyrni and the next Turkish city. Thats a tactic of war. Why a Greek city like Smyrni has to follow that plan? Of course plus "1,5 million Armenians died.. by themselves". Thats your problem and that is why you have remained so backward society despite the interaction you had for many years with the west. We know about the part of the attrocities of the Greek army in Anatolia. Do you know any attrocity of Turks. .ever? There is no self critisism and you're dumed to be like that even the next 1000 years....

PS. A. .and by the way.. all the Greeks were throwing their gold lyras inside their wells because they were wating to come back.. not because they thought they give it to Turks as present!

Jannisary do you know why Greece today is a more "forwarded" society than Turkey? Because we know abd we admitt our mistakes. There is self critisism in Greece (mainly due to a huge left wing political voters) and that is very good for a society. You are forward? You mean advanced? In terms of what? Admitting mistakes? I doubt you admit any mistakes. 1920? You live in a dream world, Basil. However, you are kind of amusing, I must admit. If the Greek army and militias had not burn the Western Anatolian cities and had not massacre the civilians, then there could have been plenty of Greeks in the area. However, they have gone to Greece instead. After all, Greeks who lost the war, and did not want to leave anything to the Mongols, that is why, they burned down everything they left behind. Is this how you admit your mistakes, by the way? ;D Well, 1.5 million is only a number suggested by pro-Armenian sources. However, let me remind you how everything started: 1914 Oct. 29 - Turkey joined Central Powers, declared war on Allies Nov. 1. Nov. 2 - Russian Caucasus Corps invaded Armenia, took Bayazid, advanced 17 miles by Nov. 4. Nov. 7 - Turks stopped Russians at Erzerum. Nov. 11 - Sultan proclaimed jihad in Constantinople. Nov. 15 - Turks defeat Russian battalion at copper mine south of Batumi, but Russian Turkestan Corps reinforced the Caucasus Corps, resumed offensive. Russians gave supplies to a volunteer Armenian division, raised from the 1 million Armenians living in Russia, that raided the region and killed 120,000 Turkish civilians. On Nov. 30, the Czar inspected the front and praised the Armenian Catholicos, saying "a brilliant future awaits the Armenians." history.sandiego.edu/gen/ww1/1915b.htmlYou wish us to be backward, but we are progressive and in fact, Turkey is one of several countries that will be the stars of the 21st Century. By the way, was it Greece or Turkey trying to invade Anatolia with the support of the British as well as the West? Last time I checked, it was the Greeks, right? Dont forget you are the one interacting with the West, and you are the one who had been enjoying billions of euros over the years. Result? Bankrupt? ;D
