A Hungarian court ruled that an international neo-Nazi march can take place in Budapest.
Monday’s ruling overturns a decision by police prohibiting the demonstration, which commemorates the defeat of German rule in Eastern Europe during World War II, for reasons of maintaining public order.
The neo-Nazi Day of Honor rally rescheduled for next month is intended to mark the last stand of the German occupiers and their Hungarian supporters against the Soviet Red Army 65 years ago.
The Nazi defeat at Buda Castle is associated in Hungary with the end of the Holocaust, which claimed the lives of more than a half-million Hungarian Jews. Annual parades mourning the Nazi losses have been staged traditionally at Heroes Square in Budapest by a coalition of European neo-Nazi organizations.
This year, the march was planned for Feb. 13 but was postponed. Instead, neo-Nazi organizations held private ceremonies, undisturbed by the police, on private grounds near the capital. Groups also staged unauthorized marches in Buda.
Two peaceful demonstrators attending an anti-Nazi rally held in Pest over the weekend were physically assaulted on their way home by a gang of skinheads.
Rosa Rein, World’s Oldest Jew, Dies
Rosa Rein, believed to be the world’s oldest Jewish person, died about a month shy of her 113th birthday.
Rein, Switzerland’s oldest resident since September 2003, died Sunday in her sleep at an old-age home near Lugano that was her residence since a fall in 2001.
Rein was born in Poland in March 1897. She married a German man and the couple immigrated to Brazil in 1938. Rein’s husband died after their arrival in Brazil.
Rein remarried in 1949. The couple moved to the outskirts of Lugano in 1964 for health reasons; she was widowed again in 1973.
Celebrating her 112th birthday last year, Rein said she could still walk but had trouble with her hearing and vision.
Her mother was killed in the Holocaust at a concentration camp.
Freud-Owned Hitler Painting to be Auctioned
A painting by Adolf Hitler and possibly owned by Sigmund Freud will be auctioned in Britain.
The watercolor, signed “A. Hitler, 1910,” is believed to have hung in Jewish psychologist Sigmund Freud’s Vienna office. The words “Sigmund Freud, Vienna” is written on the back of the painting, according to the Telegraph.
The starting price for the painting, which will be auctioned by Mullock’s Specialist Auctioneers, is about $15,600, the London newspaper reported.
The painting was brought to Italy after World War II and taken by an American soldier who was told the painting hung in Freud’s office.
Hitler and Freud lived in Vienna at the same time and could have known each other.
