Its amazing how this language has been preserved...surely in the first moment it sounds more italian than Greek....and thats natural...but the vocabulary they use is out and out (archaic) Greek. This has fascinated me a lot...plus keep in mind that these people did never get any worth mentioning care from the Greek state to preserve their culture and origins...seems that our politicians worries about Greek minorities are rather politically than nationally motivated...unfortunately...

"The most prevalent theory on the origin of Griko is the one by Gerhard Rohlfs and G. Hatzidakis, stating that Griko's roots go as back in history as the time of the ancient Greek colonisation of Southern Italy and Sicily, in the 8th century BC. In that respect, this Southern Italian dialect is the last living trace of the Greek elements that once formed Magna Graecia. This theory is backed by evidence regarding the multitude of Doric words and other ancient Greek items of vocabulary in Griko." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Griko_language

That's the right and not only been preserved. It is a recognised language in Italy again. ----------- The Italian Greeks of the south have released a newspaper in the Grecanico/Griko language, called Spitta(Σπύνθα). The organisation is called "Grika milume" (We speak Greek) and focus on news from Greece, Southern Italy and various Greek & Italian traditions. www.grikamilume.com/www.grikamilume.com/spitta/utto.pdfSince, Grico was an endangered language in Italy after WWII, a lot of work has been done to preserve it. It is a recognised language in Italy again. It has it's basis in Doric Greek and is very similar the Tsakonian language of the spartan villages in Greece. ----------- Original author of this is Flipper at www.allempires.net.

But he changed the link, so how can I gain access to it? Ajax, if you could, send me the link via PM. Now, I watched the video. Nice song and interesting stuff about those Greeks. I've always defended Greeks claim to continuity...except for the times when you upset me.

Many do not know this but throughout southern Italy and Sicily up until Mussolini took over both Greek and Italian were taught in schools. Mussolini was the one that banned Greek in order to make Italy "Italian" or more so Roman. So think about it until around 70 years ago Greek was still a primary language throughout the lands of Magna Graecia!

I find it very interesting that if you pay close enough attention their dialect of Greek is easily comprehended. I would really like to hear the people who claim Greeks are nothing but Turks, Romas, Slavs and Albanians to explain to us Greeks why the Griko people look JUST LIKE MAINLAND GREEKS?
I have a two good friends(brothers) from Sicily who are proud of their past and originate from a small town in Northeastern Sicily called NICOSIA!
