www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/womanshour/2004_50_wed_03.shtmlTurkey is challenged on its treatment of women as it seeks to join the EU This week the European Union in Brussels debates whether Turkey should be part of the EU. The treatment of women in Turkey is a key area of concern. Human rights groups along with the EU commission have repeatedly highlighted abuses of women, particularly women living in the country's underdeveloped south east. The region is known for its conservative traditions, among them polygamy. Although illegal, it continues to be commonplace in the region. But such traditions are now being challenged as Turkey seeks to join Europe.

treatment of women in Turkey by law is not different than Europe. 2ndly, some of the Kurds who live in the Southeast treat their women badly due to some of their cultural traditions.
It has nothing to do with law.
