.... ANKARA, March 8 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyann said on Saturday that the day Turkey became an European Union (EU) member would be a great occasion for happiness for Greece. Bakoyannis made the remarks at a joint news conference with her Turkish counterpart Ali Babacan in the Turkish capital of Ankara after their official meeting. "I assured Mr. Babacan that Greece supports and would continue to support Turkey's perspective regarding Europe," said she, adding that Turkey becoming an EU member would mean that the country has fulfilled EU criteria, moreover, such a development would bring stability and development to the whole region. Babacan, for his part, said that both Turkey and Greece had a positive approach towards each other currently, adding, "while our political, economic and cultural relations improve rapidly, we talk about our problems openly and we try to find solutions." "Greece supports our EU adhesion process strongly. This is really an important issue in order for the peace and stability improve in our region," he added. Last month, EU foreign ministers in Brussels outlined new priorities for Turkey to gain its accession to the 27-member regional bloc. Relations have thawed considerably over the past decade between Greece and Turkey, the two neighbors whose ties had been overshadowed by issues over Cyprus and territorial rights in the Aegean Sea.

It is just a way for Greece to finally end the Cyprus issue. If Turkey gets admitted into the E.U then they must abide by E.U law. This in turn will force their hands in Cyprus. Just think about it, how long has the Cyprus issue one unsolved with no improvements? It is just politics at it's best.

thats nothing new...
I think Greece would clearly benefit from a european turkey.
But as European Im against it, first of all because they are predominantly not Europeans, then their country lies outside of Europe to 95%+, its a country of muslims, I dont have a problem with muslims in general but I do not think that the eastern Turks (Kurds) mentality is compatible with the average European's one. I also dont think Europe is obligated to reeducate these people, Europe has to look forward, to become a united strong power, thats difficult enough.

But Cypriots are Greek Rex! They would have merged if it wasn't for the Brits back in the 60's and 70's.

It's better to have two countries..we got twice the veto power..... even though Greece is walking the diplomatic tightrope with Turkey concerning the E.U. we have Cyprus to do the dirty work for us...

Government maybe Rex, but to the people we are one in the same! I have met many Cypriots and never once have they claimed to be unrelated to me.
