What Patrinos is saying is that the "Byzantine Empire" was never called as such. The Byzantines did always call their Empire simply "Roman Empire" (Romaiki Autokratoria) and surely not "Eastern Roman Empire" either. Its important to know that because only then you can understand the policy and motives of our medieval Empire and its emperors.
The double headed eagle symbolizes this claim of the Empire. The great aim of the Byzantine Empire has always been to reerect the old Roman Empire.....especially to regain the lost western parts. Until 476 the Roman Empire was ruled by two Emperors...they said...two Emperors, one body (see the eagle). Roman political system, Greek culture, Christian religion. These were the three pillars of the Byzantine state.
Personally I find Byzantine history extremely interesting because you can much better understand modern Greek history if you know our medieval history. Byzantine history gives very many answers to important questions...
I think Greece should tie in more with Byzantine history. I have the feeling it is neglected too much in Greece...and this...although it affects us much more than ancient Greece. Ancient Greece is important without question...its where everything started. But we should see ourselves still more in the tradition of Constantinople...

Vlah.. are you an Albanian..cause you sure act like one. This is the great dead-lock that modern-neo-greek (romaiko) spirit has been driven to (mainly by the big powers). They hold us down spiritually, by using this simple technique: Any good-will criticism on todays ultra problematic neo-greek-spirit is tagged as "albanian". If you notice (now that you mentioned it i just checked out of curiosity), there is nothing pro-albanian in my post. I dont know why you even raised this point in the first place. It seems like neo-greeks are programmed to not think. But it is natural. Our history is such a big violated and raped and modified lie that it provides solid obstacles to any further developments of our NEW nation. We are indeed a very new nation, the newest in the balkans, and it will take 100s of years to adopt a common set of values. I think the genes are there. God will have to help as well. Point is, the sooner we forget the total lies we learned in books, the sooner we will develop. easy hey?

a humble oppinion: In the area where greece stands, for 2000 years there have been standing 3 great empires, that included many nations. The year 1453 in greek schools is mentionned as the year that the barbarians stole our capital. But the Empire was already corrupted and weak. Every empire has a date of expiration. The Ottoman Empire had one itself, and diminished to today's Turkey... And long before that, the greeks became christians and when the christianity became our "official religion", emperors like Theodosios destroyed with their own hands ancient statues and sites. What i want to say is that cultures, religions, empires rise & fall, but the question is, what is our present situation of the greeks as we are now, whether we are of vlch, cretan, slav, ancient greek roots??? Our present situation is the one of the only nation in the balkans without a solid external policy dogma, without tradition in manufacturing, engineering, large scale agriculture, without the slightest ability in simple technical matters, organization, without adequate tourist services etc. Now that the west decided no more money for Greece, i see several delusioned people still try to blame the politicians, the west, the east, etc... without not even a single one, to say the plain truth: neo-Greek nation is of limited ability. And this has to change.

I mentioned that cause of your style, you insult without being provoked. For all your fancy vocabulary ...adding the word "bitch" at end of your phrase is a common Albanian trait.... So come clean and tell us who you really are.
