I think it all depends on what your looking for... I went on a cruise in October that took me to some different islands and I must say that Santorini was absolutely breathtaking. It was heaven to me... also I cannot forget what a great time I had at Mykonos. I had lunch with my wife on the water and it was amazing. Fresh sardines, shrimp, octopus, kalamari, taramosalata along with alcohol the waiter kept giving me and my wife for free. Made me feel alive and happy!

Syros is the Queen of Cyclades. Very high level of spirit and intellect there. Lets only remember that industrial revolution in Greece started from Syros. There is even an industrial museum there. In Syros, also, and this is a must, TRY THE LOCAL SAUSAGES!!!! its with kimino!!! 100% delicious! Also, while at Syros, another must is to read the "apanta of Emanuil Roidis" (especially Papisa Ioana), el.wikipedia.org/wiki/%CE%95%CE%BC%CE%BC%CE%B1%CE%BD%CE%BF%CF%85%CE%AE%CE%BB_%CE%A1%CE%BF%CE%90%CE%B4%CE%B7%CF%82and of course one brilliant poet "Georgios Souris"!!! the guy is unbelievably great!! (its like writing satyrical poems for todays' Greece!!) el.wikipedia.org/wiki/%CE%93%CE%B5%CF%8E%CF%81%CE%B3%CE%B9%CE%BF%CF%82_%CE%A3%CE%BF%CF%85%CF%81%CE%AE%CF%82Santorini is beautiful, Mykonos so and so. Naxos i think is great, with good people, Ios has great locals as well. (Naxos, Santorini and Ios populace resembles a lot to Crete, they say "Inta kameis" they use "ts" instead of "k", etc..). And last but not least, CRETE the GREAT ISLAND!!! But its not just an island, its a fokking Continent!!!

Visit Kephalonia/Ithaki. I wouldn't exaggerate if i say that its the most beautiful place in Mediterranean. The total green nature right next to the total blue of the Ionian pelagos.

The species of vertebrates who tend to burn the greek flag very often.... WTF? wait a minute... you mean Ermoupolis has a lot of anarchists or smth? did they burn the Greek flag in the middle of the harbor or smth in the middle of day? I cannot imagine that. I have been to Syros, and it was one of the few places in Greece which made me a proud Greek.

The cafes were filled with young people who's every sentence started with 're malaka'... and the villages were exactly the same with old people with huge combologia...Crete is not what it used to be... nowadays it's another huge island with social problems...stick to the small islands for more fun.

^^^ partially i agree, just got back from Makrys Gialos, Lasithi, and passing through Iraklio i saw drivers fighting and yelling at each other, just like in Athens... that sucked... That was not *my* Iraklio i had in my heart... I heard stories, about the *new* generation from the villages around Iraklio, going down town in the saturday, with their huge "agrotika" 4x4 nissan-toyota-ford-mitsubishi-etc..., shooting bullets in the air, taking drugs, showing off their guns, like its some f**king latino-gang in the states... This is not what i remembered from Crete, even the gun mentality, albeit always strong in Crete, it had a more noble and gentle orientation... now, this is f**king decay.... the worse thing, is that people from eastern Crete (i dont know about western), and i mean 5 out of the 5 people i spoke to, want independence from Greece... now, realistically speaking the guys "produce".... Of course Chios have their "Mastiha" shops, which is 100% cool, but Crete produces products (agricultural products) *massively*. I think, Crete alone could kick Croatia's ass agriculturally speaking. Also i think that Lasithi alone, could kick whole Epiros + dytiki sterea... The green houses is smth hard to describe.. there were *everywhere*!!! Also the meat products, were absolutely fabulous, delicious, healthy and well made... (Cretan apaki www.paterakisfamily.gr/index.php?section=16c is so cool,it could be even exported to ex-yu...)

I've been to many Greek islands, and Santorini is by far the best.
But if you want peace and quiet, not much tourist and a place to chill, I recommend Kythera.
