Greek men are mommy’s boys
It seems that the stereotype of the average Greek man who lives at home until a worryingly advanced age and relies on his mother to do all his cooking and cleaning might be accurate after all.
According to figures made public yesterday by Eurostat, the European Union’s statistics agency, Greeks are more likely to live at home with their parents until their late 20s or mid-30s than almost any other European men.
The numbers indicate that 56 percent of Greek men aged 25 to 34 live in their parents’ home. Only men in Bulgaria (61 percent) and Slovenia (60) percent are more reliant on their mothers and fathers.
By contrast, only 8 percent of Finns, 4 percent of Swedes and 3 percent of Danes in the same age group live at their parental homes. The EU average was 32 percent.
Greek men also rank last in terms of the proportion who cohabit with their partners.
However, the survey was also revealing about the tendencies of Greek women in their 20s and 30s. It indicated that 36 percent of them also remain with mom and dad between the ages of 25 and 34, just behind Slovenia (38 percent) and Slovakia (42 percent). The EU average was 20 percent.
Unsurprisingly, Greece also ranks high in the 18-24 age group, where 67.7 percent of women and 84.4 percent of men live with their parents. The EU average in this age group was 71 percent for women and 82 percent for men.
The survey, which used 2008 figures, found that 46 percent of Europeans aged 18 to 34 (or 51 million people in total) still live with their parents.

Northern Europeans and Americans have no fvcking clue what family is. It means nothing to them. They can't wait for their kids to leave home once they reach 18. Most Southern European parents become hysterical if their kids leave home

I think leaving after college is the best time...
My parents were so eager to get rid of me they helped me buy a condo lol. Best thing they ever did. You learn a lot living by yourself.

My parents don't do a damn thing for me... It negatively effected me as a child and young adult because I made many mistakes but I was smart enough to learn from them. Now I am perfect and live my life without flaw. I guess they sure taught me, huh. Lol.

I'm 24 and i live in my parents' house. Its pretty normal in Greece if you are not a student in a foreign city(like my little brother) or a police-officer, military, fireman, coast-guard who works you want it or not in a border area or Athens. I think its very logical because a young professional and generally a young person is very helped and can make serious savings when he doesn't run a house of his own since his early 20's... and he's able to live his live... until he is married(like my big brother ) who is now a noikokiris....

I live at home and I've had a huge debate with coworkers concerning this issue. In the States, there's definitely a negative image of a non-student living with their parents. They're seen as lazy, immature, and etc. I don't buy it, and I don't see the point of living on my own where I would struggle to do so. I'd rather save up and buy my own place. Nor do I think living on my own would really accelerate my growth as a person (which sounds like BS btw.) The only thing that would change is I would have to pay more expenses. Thats about it.
Although a few years ago I was seriously considering moving out with some roommates. I presented the idea to my parents and they were against the idea to the point my mom swore she would never talk to me again if I moved out. They took it as a sign of disrespect and they didn't look at it from the POV of me living on my own, but they construed it as me abandoning them lol.

I don't think there's anything wrong with living at home at an "old" age (I totally agree with Zoti, by the way) - given that you take proper responsibilities for yourself, pitch in around your parents' house and become an asset rather than a burden (to your parents). I know a few guys who're in their 30s, jobless, still living at home and doing absolutely no progress in life. That's just pathetic... I had it good at home with my parents but I have to be honest and say that it hasn't had all positive impacts on me. You know how you see those obnoxious, spoiled teenagers on TV who get ridiculous, extravagant things by their parents? And who are babied a lot? That was me, pretty much - and for that reason, I didn't learn the things I should've learned - it'd be very hard for me, if not impossible, to live on my own now. I mean, I could physically take care of myself...pay the bills, clean, cook etc...but I'd get extremely lonely, very fast, and that would totally affect my experience of being independant. I would hate it...no, absolutely detest it . I'm not used to solitude...I have to have someone around me. It's funny because my sister is the total opposite of me...she's living on her own in New York right now and having a blast. I could never do that...

I dont think there is anything wrong living with your parents.Like Vanilo Vanila,if you do your bit in maintaining the house and paying part of the bills, then I dont see that as parasiting. And you should also be doing some important things by yourself.
Why not living with your parents? They're your family.
