A missile defence system covering all Nato countries has been agreed at the alliance's summit in Lisbon, US President Barack Obama has said. The shield would cover all Nato members in Europe and North America. Nato is also backing the swift ratification of the Start treaty between the US and Russia, cutting nuclear weapon stockpiles. The summit will discuss Afghanistan on Saturday, with plans to end combat operations by 2014. Nato will ask Russia to co-operate on missile defence and join the system. On Saturday, leaders will meet Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, who is attending the summit. Discussions will also focus on a shift in strategy for Nato in Afghanistan. Building nuclear weapons for Iran will come and bite Russia on the butt. Russia is in an open conflict with almost all of the republics with Muslim majority in the Russian federation. What will stop Iran to not pass some of those weapons to the "Muslim brothers" in need of help tomorrow?

Let the moron spend billions of dollars (dollars which America doesn't even have) on idiotic missile defense systems while their economy goes to shit and their people become poorer and poorer. They voted for "change" this is what they get. Fuckin ridiculous.

You all don't understand Obamas great politics, even Americans. The US treasury has over 1 trillion dollars who it cant spend if its not for a project or something else, so Obama is using this "missile defense system" as a project to free the budget of the treasury so later it can be spend on other things that Obama promised, but things might go wrong as he lost towards republicans in the past elections.

The main reason for this missile defense shield according to NATO is Iran. I didn't know that Israel sold weapons and trained the Iranians during Iraq - Iran war. The comment that i found really interesting is this:
Mossad accused over 1987 death of German politician
I have Ostrovsky's book (The Other Side of Deception) here, so I might as well provide some background (and keep in mind that Ostrovsky is someone who claims to be Ex-Mossad, and that there are rarely any definitive facts in that business):
Iran needed spare parts for its air force, especially for the Phantom F-4. Israel had these parts, and was interested in keeping the Iran-Iraq-war going (the enemy of my enemy ...). Since the two couldn't deal directly with each other for obvious reasons, the German foreign service, BND, was used as a middleman. This exchange was put into place and worked for some time (from Israel via Italy, Germany and Denmark into Iran).
Iran then decided that their pilots needed training. They approached the BND, who in turn relayed that inquiry on to Mossad. It was then decided that training could take place on a former airfield near Kiel, Germany, where the Iranian pilots would be trained by Israeli pilots. That was put into place as well.
At some time, there was a political crisis in Denmark (Ostrovsky doesn't give details here), so the BND asked then head-of-state of Schleswig-Holstein (the German state that Kiel is in) Uwe Barschel, whether they could use German harbours for the shipments instead of the harbours in Denmark. Barschel refused.
So Mossad now wanted to get rid of Barschel, given that elections were soon to be held in Schleswig-Holstein. They started a very noticeable surveillance of Barschel's opponent (who must have been Björn Engholm, but he doesn't say that in the book). Very shortly before the elections, a man hired by Mossad admitted that he was behind the survaillance and claimed that he was hired by Barschel. Barschel lost the election to Engholm.
Barschel now went to the BND and threatened to make their actions public unless they cleared him of these accusations, which by now had led to a full-blown public investigation. Barschel threatened to testify as a witness in that investigation, which put both Mossad and BND in a tight spot. Mossad contacted Barschel and offered him money, but Barschel refused. Hence, Barschel had to be taken care of.
He died one day before his planned testimony in the investigation. His death caused quite a stir here in Germany, and is pretty mysterious to this day.
