if you don't accept this truth then you assume that "Bulgarian Slavs" started as a united entity from the original homeland of Slavs (today Poland/Belarus?who knows for sure) and migrated all together in the "bulgarian lands" where by... addopting the Bulgars in order to be ruled by them created a kingdom that finally fullfiled their dream of a Bulgarian state? Patrinos, there were indeed dialectal differences within Slavic that are traced by linguists to the first century AD. For example, below is a reconstruction of the Proto-Slavic groups in their relation to the Baltic languages. For details check these excerpts on my site, from two books of Samuel Bernstein ("Comparative grammar of the Slavic l-s", Moscow, 2005) and Oleg Trubachev ("Etymological studies ...", M., 2004): (Trubacev's scheme of proto-Slavic divisions circa I c. AD)One can see that, on one hand, the proto-Balgarski&proto-Makedonski (proto-B&M)overlap: - with proto-Srbski&proto-Hrvatski (proto-S&H), on one side - with proto-Polish on the other but - proto-Polish does not share the Balticisms (Baltic loanwords in the Slavic dialects) that are found in proto-B&M and in proto-S&H. Furthermore - there are some Balticisms that are found in proto-B&M only, - but there are other Balticisms that are not to be found in proto-B&M but are found in proto-S&H and also in proto-Ukrainian&Belorussian. So, yes, it is possible to distinguish between the various Slavic dialects. Whether you would call them "proto-B&M" and "proto-H&S" is a different story altogether. It has to do with the subsequent history of these tribes/states.

Wow, now you put a full stop after a question mark? What is next? A comma after a dash?

^ Pyrro, we have an annoying mosquito (Khan Ruseche) and an annoying fly (Asen). One sucks blood out of you and injects poisonious Turkish outlook, while the other, lives and breeds on waste (excrement) during the night, while during the day, will dump smelly rotten sources on you.

^ aha, so where does church slavonic fit in all of this?. Church Slavonic doesn't fit well. First, as a literary language it was enriched by non-Slavic expressions (calques from Greek, for example). Secondly, if you read the Russian text of Trubachev, Church Slavic apparently doesn not contain many of these Balticisms.
