Former rebel leader Hashim Thaci wins elections in Kosovo
11/18/2007
Kosovo's snow capped capital Pristina awoke on Sunday after a night of celebrations from supporters of the main opposition party, the Democratic Party of Kosovo, which has declared victory in the parliamentary elections.
The party of former rebel leader Hashim Thaci, who has promised to declare Kosovo's independence if mediation efforts fail, led the parliamentary election on Saturday, according to an unofficial tally by independent observers.
With most votes counted, the Democratic Party of Kosovo was leading with 35 percent, according to the Democracy in Action coalition of monitoring groups.

I say give him a chance. LDK prospered for quite some time under the name of the honored Dr.Ibrahim Rugova. They felt safe, confident in the support of the people for their party. And in their confidence, corruption started to crop up and eventually thrive.
I am not saying PDK is or will be different. But I do believe that their support is more fragile, more temporary, and thus more dependant on delivery, or political output and outcome. They cannot afford the LDK passivity without loosing already in the next elections. And so, conclusively, I am not speaking of genuine goodness for PDK's part, but rather strategical thinking. Time will tell, and it is too early to pass judgement on Thaci and his future government. But if they deliver, I sense that Thaci will have a long carreer, and that PDK will be re-elected for quite some time. If he plays his cards right, Thaci will proove to be the only living political profile able to fill the authoritative vacuum left behind by Rugova, which will lead to unity and a more uniformed voice for independence.

It's a change. I say Hashim represents the radical voice of the Kosovar people and today where the issue has been prolonged and prolonged forever, that can be a good shift in policy. We need a more active and agressive diplomacy.
Of course with the help and coordination of US and EU.
