Serbia has condemned Kosovo’s decision to block imports of goods with Serbian custom stamps as a provocation, saying it will negatively impact on the current EU-moderated dialogue.
Serbia's President, Boris Tadic, told the news agency Tanjug that blocking imports from Serbia was a “hostile gesture", but one to which Belgrade will not react.
“This is a provocation for Serbia. We won’t react, as we don’t react to any other provocation, because we need a stable situation in the region," Tadic said, adding that the EU foreign policy, Chief Catherine Ashton, had assured him that Brussels would not support Kosovo’s decision.
Tadic said the decision might well have a damaging effect on dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina, but expressed hopes that "the negotiating process will not be completely disrupted".
Kosovo decided to block goods with Serbian custom stamps, after Serbia refused to abide by the terms of the Central Europe Free Trade Agreement, which demands free movement of goods in the region.
Serbia does not recognise Kosovo custom stamps, and since the country declared independence in February 2008, there have been no such exports to Serbia.
Kosovo’s move followed the cancellation of the latest round of talks between Kosovo and Serbia, which was due to discuss Kosovo's customs stamps.
Serbia's Deputy Prime Minister, Bozidar Djelic, said that Kosovo was conducting “destructive politics” in an attempt to gain an advantage in the ongoing negotiations.
He said that Serbia would be violating its own constitution if it recognised Kosovo’s custom stamps.
“I believe this issue will soon be resolved with our European partners, as both Pristina and Belgrade are under pressure to reach a compromise and find a solution that would be acceptable for Pristina, but that should not be inconsistent with the constitution of Serbia and our national policy,” Djelic said.
The leader of Belgrade`s negotiating team with Pristina, Borislav Stefanovic, also slated what he called Pristina's “self-destructive decision”.
"We have already informed European partners about this unilateral move from Pristina and we expect that they will make moves to cancel this decision as soon as possible,” Stefanovic told Beta news agency.
“Now we need to have patience and wisdom, continue the dialogue and put even more effort into finding solutions for the free exchange of goods between the two entities,” Stefanovic said.
An EU source in Brussels told Balkan Insight that Brussels regretted the action that Kosovo had taken.
The next round of talks in which Belgrade and Pristina were due to talk about custom stamps had been scheduled for this week, but was then postponed to September.
“We would have preferred this question to have been discussed in September," the source said.
"Serbia was breaking the Central European Free Trade Agreement, CEFTA, and now Kosovo is putting itself in the same position. They had the moral high ground before,” the source added.

Yes, Kosovo is blocking Serbian goods, just after Serbia rejected any official stamp stating the state of Kosovo on any of their goods. Sounds reasonable to me, someone has got to step up, lol. Aint this like a soap opera Rex?

This is great to hear! And there's nothing special that gets blocked here; Serbian products are vastly inferior to Croatian products for example.

www.balkaninsight.com/en/article/tensions-over-kosovo-serbia-border-rise-againKosovo's leader, Hashim Thaci, said on Wednesday that there was "no going back" on the police operation aimed at taking control of customs posts in Serb-held north Kosovo. This was "a moment of truth for the new Kosovo," the Prime Minister said. "Kosovo will not turn back, there will be no return to the status quo." He also launched an attack on the EU-rule of law mission, EULEX, for not supporting the action saying that "for 12 years the international community has failed to take even one act to restore law and order in that part of the territory of Kosovo." Thaci spoke out as Kosovo police told Balkan Insight that they were sending special police units back to man customs posts in the north, after allowing them to leave to attend the funeral of a colleague who died in a shootout on Tuesday.

(Reuters) - Armed ethnic Serbs, who attacked and burned down a border post, fired at NATO peacekeeping forces in Kosovo on Wednesday in the ethnic-Serb dominated northern part of the country.
"The situation deteriorated at the customs post Jarinje and it was confirmed that an act of arson was committed against that position... There have also been confirmed reports of shots fired at KFOR personnel in the vicinity," NATO peacekeeping mission in Kosovo (KFOR) said in a statement.
The NATO statement did not say whether anyone was injured in the attack or whether KFOR troops returned fire, but said reinforcements had been sent to the border.
A Serb witness on the scene saw dozens of masked men, armed with crowbars, clubs, axes, Molotov cocktails and handheld flares, burn down the border crossing post.
Customs and police officers fled to the nearby KFOR outpost after their border post was set alight and were chased by the armed Serbs.

The International Civilian Office (ICO), headed by Pieter Feith, released that the most important thing at the moment is that the situation in Kosovo be resolved in a peaceful manner, through talks and dialogue.
The Kosovo government has the right to ensure the functioning of a proper administration, including that which refers to borders and custom control, the International Civilian Office said.
ICO at the same time urges the government that in its efforts to establish administrative control on the whole of its territory, it provides necessary assurances and support to the people in the north.
The present situation underlines the importance of a full engagement of both Belgrade and Pristina in the dialogue assisted by the EU, all with the aim to improve the quality of the life of the people, ICO stated.

Kosovo’s Prime Minister defended an order for his special police to take control of two contested border crossings with Serbia in which a Kosova police died despite the criticism of EU and the U.S., as NATO deploys extra troops on the disputed border area. The ethnic Albanian police officer was shot in the head when a police convoy came under fire in a Serb-dominated area. Another four slightly injured, by a grenade blast. Prime Minister Hashim Thaci said the operation was a “concrete step in establishing the rule of law” in the volatile north. “We cannot remain indifferent and allow that a part of our territory remains a black hole, not only for Kosovo, but for Europe as well,” Thaci told reporters. The raid by special police backed by armored vehicles was launched on the orders of Thaci after his government banned all Serb products and Serbia refused to accept Kosovo’s customs stamps.

Children ... No one was hurt in the firebombing, according to The Associated Press. It occurred hours after Kosovo’s special police withdrew from the area after seizing a border post on Monday night and trying to take control of a second one. A Kosovo police officer was killed in the police action.
