One of my close friends whose family fled to Turkey during the second Balkan War from Thessaloniki, has asked me something and I need the opinion of you guys. But I should give some background info before that. He is turkish, muslim, and his family is what turkish people call a "muhacir". They fled from Thessaloniki in 1912, come to Polis and started a new life. He has recently asked me had if he converted to christianity, and accepted the way of greek life, could he become a greek? At first I said; "I don't think so, I mean I think you need greek blood to be greek". But he pointed out the fact that his ancestors are no doubt muslim hellenes and tbh, he looks like a proper greek. So I told him to give me some time to ask it to a few greeks and all. What is your opinion guys?

Ok fine, i'll be serious. It depends on which Greek croud he would be accepted in, obviously if he wants to be a Greek he doesn't have to be Orthodox to be Greek plently of Greeks are born Orthodox are not religious! But they are still Greek, if you want to get him in a WN Greek croud then obviously not he will not be accepted. But yes, if he's racially Greek then he's Greek and he should be accepted Muslim or not.

Hm...no. There are too many cultural differences by now....his ancestors were "traitors"...surely he could convert to Christianity and thus make an important step...but never could he erase his family's history...he cant become an "ordinary" Greek. And if he stayed a muslim...a fortiori. Its an illusion to believe that modern Greekness is a flexible term like Americanism for example. A muslim would never be accepted by society as a standard Greek. Citizenship is another case again...

I don't honestly know, he seemed sincere and I didn't ask anymore questions. Therefore, I cannot comment on his reasons. What is your opinion Canaris?

Anything is possible.. just changing religions is not enough. I have seen Albanians that have lived in Greece for over 20 years and speak Greek in a way that you would never guess where they are from... they know the "feeling and tastes" of the Greek language as well as the small quirks, stares and chills... they have completely immersed themselves into Greek culture. They go to church and kiss the priests hand on Sundays... they wave the Greek flag on Independence day... These people I consider Greek... If your friend can do that from the heart ...then he can call himself Greek... Being Greek is not a blood thing but a feeling and culture...and belonging...

All the Greeks ( and other Balkaners ) that converted to Islam were under the Turkish Yolk at the time, you can't call them race traitors. My family became Turkish and joined the army for money and position. If he really wants to be Greek or fit in with a Greek group he still can, if he denounces Islam like my Mother ( since we have moved back to the West ) and me have then I don't see the problem. There are many Turks with European and Balkan roots.

They don't give up their race because they aren't racially Turkish... They are ( for arguments sake ) a Armenian, Georgian, Albanian, Greek, Bulgarian, Hungarian, Bosnian, Serbian, Kurd whatever is holding a Turkish passport living in Turkey, I don't identify with being Turkish apart from the surname's that my family have I tell them that we are Greek Bulgarian and Azerbaijani mixed. Not just ''Turks'' there is no Turkish race. The Bosnians and Georgians do not identify with being Turkish either There are Turks with European roots you can be White and be Turkish and you can be Greek and be Turkish. If he is Greek I see no problem in accepting him. People make mistakes in life.

In that perspective every Greek who went to Germany as immigrant, in a sense, has given up his identity (or part of his identity) for money. And if Germans tomorrow say, e.g. you denounce your orthodox faith or they kick you out of the factory, i guess the majority of proud Greeks like you will comply. Same thing of they decide to close down the Greek schools.

What is your opinion guys? My opinion is that this country of ours (not yours) is already enough looking like an asian country of middle east. No, we don't need more Asians (Turks, pakis, albanians) in our country. As a matter of fact, injection of more civilized people (Germanics/Slavs) would not work either. Smth has to be natural in order to be successful. Best thing that can be done is to produce more Cretans/Cypriots and install them in the mainland. Wipe out the old asian/albanian habits and grekify the land.

Why is Pyrros and a couple of Albanians answering the question, when they're not Greeks?
