I dont remember if this matter has been discused in here already. It's pretty impressive though that one of the commonest names in Italy is Greco. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greco_(surname)Greco is an Italian surname, one of the most common in the whole country, and it literally means "Greek". Historically, its popularity is due to the frequent relationships between Italy and Greece: in particular, it spread within the Griko communities in the South of Italy and the Arbëreshë minority emigrated from the Balkans since the 15th century. Curiously enough, it is also listed as a Jewish surname in Italy. List of persons with the surname Buddy Greco, American singer and pianist Gaetano Greco, Italian Baroque composer Gioachino Greco, Italian chess player and writer Joey Greco, American television producer José Greco, flamenco dancer and choreographer Juliette Gréco, French chanson singer and actress Marco Greco, Italian physician Michael Greco, Scottish actor Michael S. Greco, first foreign-born President of the Massachusetts Bar Association, the New England Bar Association, and the American Bar Association Pino Greco, member of the Sicilan Mafia Salvatore Greco, member of the Sicilan Mafia Stephen Greco, epic Social Studies teacher Michele Greco, member of the Sicilan Mafia James Greco, Chief Executive Officer of Bruegger's Corporation Jim Greco, Professional Skateboarder

Its as Pyrros says...."Rumi" means "Greek"....next to "Yunani".
The Turks do also have the two terms "Yunan" and "Rum" for us..
When the Arabs came for the first time in contact with us in history we didnt call ourselves "Ellines" but "Romaioi" (or "Romioi) thus they called us "Rumi". "Rumeli" means "land of the Romaioi/Greeks" and means European part of the Ottoman Empire (the balkan peninsula).
So its actually perverse to call the Greeks of todays Greece "Yunanlar" (Ioanians) and the Greeks of the Polis, Anatolia and Cyprus "Rumlar"...

The Arabs, the Palestinians called them that ( the Byzantines ) because of the Philistines The word Yunan just means Ionian. Yani Ceris = Janissaries most of the Greeks that were picked up by the Turks were Northern Greeks who are of Ionian descent also the ones from Crete, the Cretans are Ionian and Dorian mixed.

NATIVE ANATOLIANS ARE THE DESCENDANTS OF HELLENAS, NOTHING MORE NOTHING LESS en.wikipedia.org/wiki/yoruks The Yoruks, also Yuruks (Greek: Γιουρούκοι, Bulgarian: юруци, Macedonian: Јуруци, Turkish: Yörük) are Turkmen Settler of Anatolia and Balkan, ultimately of Oghuz descent, some of whom are still nomadic, primarily inhabiting the mountains of Anatolia and partly Balkan peninsula.[

Thirty percent of Italian surnames of South Italy are of Greek origin Grisafi : Southern Italian: nickname from medieval Greek khrysaphi ‘gold’ (classical Greek khrysos, Southern Italian Greek grisafi). Barilla is of Greek origin Nikodemos etc........
