Souvlaki is attested in Greece since antiquity and it was known with the name ὀβελίσκος (obeliskos), dim. of ὀβελός (obelos), "spit", mentioned amongst others in the works of Aristophanes, Xenophon, Aristotle, The skewed meat, kebab-like recipe, existed as a favourite in ancient Greece at Archaic times, as the earliest references are attested in Homer.
Have one and be like the Gods!

Unfortunately there are way to many Kebab houses rather than Souvlaki stores in Melbourne.

Problem is that greeks still haven;t learned HOW TO WRAP UP SOUVLAKI WITH PITA properly, so juice and other liquids can make a real mess. Another problem, and this applies only to athenians : YOU STUPID DUMPFUCKS, Its not kalamaki, its SOUVLAKI you idiots!!!
In athens when you ask a pita with souvlaki, you get gyros instead.... somebody teach them greek...

If it was in Serbia or Bulgaria, they would have huge festivals devoted to "souvlaki" and pita and gyros. With contestants, and prizes and everything. Also there should be schools to teach people who want to work in the field, HOW EXACTLY it is supposed to be made, packed, prepared, etc....
There not many festivals like that in Greece... unfortunately...

Not a big fan of this food. It get's messy to eat and doesn't feel very healthy.
What's the difference between the Turkish Kebab and the Greek Souvlaki anyway? The Turks here in Australia have a monopoly of selling their Kebabs for people who stumble out of clubs at 3am.

^True that, go to a fish and chip shop if you want a good Souvlaki. Hopefully a Greek owns it

I heard the Greeks don't know how to cook seafood properly, is this true? I love seafood but never tried Greek-style.
