It is carnival time in FYROM, or at least it is in the town of Vetsivani. This year's attration: The funeral of Greece! More exactly, during the carnival parade Saturday night in the town Vetsvani in FYROM. a coffin wrapped with the Greek national flag began making its way into the main square of the town. After some wine, some dancing and carnival pranks, the organizers started to say that "we have good news for you, (Greece) has died after 181 years" since Ottoman rule and then the highlight of the evening was the setting on fire ritual to the Greek flag! The "Ntnevnik" newspaper said that this was simply carnival madness, while other local news did not even broadcast the event in fear of the general reaction.
In Greece it was certainly not received well by citizens. FYROM continues to provoke the patience and filotimo we have as a nation. In Greece, there was no mention of the event, even though several alternative news channels broadcasted the youtube video and as always it was only featured on the blogs.

Relax..this is just a little fun. FOPOGreeks seem to be a little touchy these days...seriously though this festival has been celebrated continuously for the past 1,400 years. Do FOPOGreeks have any festivals that are this old and celebrated annually? macedoniaonline.eu/content/view/20094/19/Vevcani Carnival ... notes Greece's passing Friday, 13 January 2012 Vevcani is one of Europe's oldest carnival spanning 1,400 years. It's a carnival of irony, mocking people, companies, organizations, countries... both internal and external. One of this year's victims was Greece for obvious reasons. The people of Vevcani paraded a coffin wrapped with a Greek flag (slightly on fire), marking the 181 year of existence, from birth to death. The ironic pamphlet informing citizens of Greece's passing states: Good News Suddenly, after a prolonged agitation we are left without our dear neighbor, the former Turkish province of (Hell-ass) (Greece, Hellas, Ellada, Yunanistan or whatever they call themselves). They were 181 years old. Born 1830 (London Protocol) - Died 2011 (Hague) The information pamphlet marked the family who mourns the passing of Greece: The list includes: "EU, USA, Russia, Serbia, Egypt, Chatzirmakakis, Borjan Jovanovski, Vladimir Milcin, Branko Gerovski, Biljana Sekulovska and the rest ..." The list includes names of Macedonian 'journalists' bribed by Athens

Not that I have anything against Greeks but that looks like awesome fun. I wish I was there to join in on the festivities. Say what you will but Macedonians are fun people.

Since our independence Greeks have imposed economic embargoes on us, vetoed our inclusion into world bodies, continued oppressing the Macedonian minority in their borders, not recognised our name etc etc etc....what great neighbours we have....

You call this an honorable way to express anger and disatisfaction? of course you support it, you're not critical of anything that carries the "Macedonian" name. I think it's a great way to poke fun at them....this is the least they deserve...

Greeks are Ionian and Dorian sometimes a combo of both like for example Cretans. Maybe Greeks but not Macedonians. Macedonians are a mixture of ancient Macedonians (Thraco-Illyrian people) fused with Slavs....
