Greek ex-minister's husband moved a million euros abroad
Athens - The husband of former Greek foreign minister Dora Bakogianni moved one million euros (1.3 million dollars) out of the country last year to buy a boat, the parliament speaker said on Tuesday, ending days of speculation. The head of the parliamentary committee for money laundering, Panagiotis Nikoloudis, last week revealed that a member of parliament had moved one million euros abroad while Greeks were being told to keep their funds in the country - but did not say who. Parliament speaker Filippos Petsalnikos identified the individual as Bakogianni's husband, businessman Isidoros Kouvelos. Bakogianni defended her husband, stating that he had transferred the money from the United States to Greece before moving it to Britain to buy the ship. The transfers, which are not illegal, were known to the authorities, she added. 'The activities of my husband were registered and declared. He is a shipowner and has been doing this all his life,' she told Greek television. Parliamentarians, who had demanded to know who Nikoloudis was referring to last week, argued that the allegation cast a shadow on all 300 deputies, while many said that not everything that was legal was also moral. All foreign transfers by legislators are under scrutiny at present. Greece, which is the recipient of international bailout funds to stave off bankruptcy, is suffering from capital flight. There are fears that its economy will not survive the debt crisis. monster and critics news
