another interesting one
Viennese Newspaper Claims Ikaria Islanders Wish to be Annexed into Austria
“On the island of Ikaria residents are considering holding a referendum to decide whether its 9,000 residents will continue to be governed by Athens or become independent,” Viennese free press newspaper Heute claimed quoting an alleged report by Italian newspaper Libero. The Greek Embassy in Austria reacted to the bad taste of Heute editors, or rather their lack of professionalism, with a furious statement rejecting the validity of the report.
“The government has forgotten us years ago. If one cannot assure us now, new roads and a hospital, we may decide to break away from Athens,” Heute claims the islanders have threatened.
“It is difficult for us to remain independent. But we could demand the annexation to another country. Of course, not to Turkey, better to Austria,” the islanders ostensibly said during the celebrations of the 100th Anniversary of Independence from the Ottoman Empire.
The Austrian journalist even asked an expert’s opinion on whether it would be possible for Austria to finally get direct access to beaches in the Aegean Sea after the “annexation.”
“They have really gone too far, saying “The secession of the island would have serious consequences for the Greek economy.”
”Ikaria is an inseparable part of Greek territory and there is no agreement between the Greek government and the island that runs out,” underlined the statement of the Greek Embassy. It appears that some residents expressed a strange opinion and the Italian journalist got it all wrong. No official spokesman or the island’s Mayor ever stated that Ikaria wishes to be annexed into any other country, or even become independent for that matter.

No official spokesman or the island’s Mayor ever stated that Ikaria wishes to be annexed into any other country, or even become independent for that matter. The mayor of Ikaria has said his island has no intention of leaving the Greek state, following a series of reports in the Italian, Austrian and German press claiming the islanders were considering secession. In an interview with Greek television on Wednesday, Christodoulos Stavrinadis said: "The statements that we want to belong to Austria are the product of a sick imagination. "There is no movement for independence; that is nonsense," he continued, in comments quoted by the RIA Novosti agency. On Tuesday, the Greek embassy in Vienna also dismissed Austrian newspaper reports claiming that islanders on Ikaria were considering a referendum to leave Greece and unite with Austria. www.athensnews.gr/portal/1/57013

Truly,a sad incident. It wasn't nice to humiliate this man.I suppose that these were members of "golden dawn",the notorious chauvinist party.
But,on the other hand i realize that most of the Greeks feel very angry because they experience nothing but humiliation and defeat at least for a couple of years. This morning,a taxi driver was so upset because of the crisis...He even seemed dangerous if anyone would say that the politicians are doing their job well.

and ......not good .....
Over 25,000 Greeks Migrated to Germany in 2011,
Report German Financial Times
More than 25,000 Greek people migrated to Germany in the past year, report Financial Times Deutschland (FTD) who stress that this number equals to 0.6% of workers or 250,000 German workers that could work instead of foreigners.
According to a Trendforce Institute poll hosted by the newspaper, half of the graduates from Greek technical schools as well as 40% of those graduated from corresponding schools in Spain, Italy and Portugal are thinking about leaving their countries. Moreover, thousands of doctors have already left Greece in a bid to find a job.
Nobel laureate in Economic Science, Mr Robert Mundell, explains that immigration is one of the factors that could help Greece and other southern European countries deal with recession. He mentions two more factors- lower prices in products and lower wages. German Financial Times add also that in 2011, 33,000 Italian people and 28,000 Spaniards moved to Germany, that is far more than Greek migration numbers.

Id rather believe the statements coming from the mayors mouth rather then what a newspaper says... yea I understand but just the thought of breaking away is put in peoples minds is enough ......and the way the economy is going it could happen for real and an easy threat ....you know histories continue and history happens day by day borders change and will change nothing can stop that ....NOT THE UN ,EU ,PYRROS ,USA, CIA,FBI,PUTIN ,KGB OR GREECE ;D tell me you cant imagine Crete ,Hios or Corfu breaking away one day ? let alone up north where they have the good green land

I want Albania to break away from Greece.... is that gonna happen? Never gonna happen. Since 1081 AD our destinies became intertwined. Except for the religion bit, our countries have more in common with each other than with anyone else.
