Sea port operator Luka Koper has signed a letter of intent on cooperation with Iranian sea ports. The letter was signed during a visit to Iran with the Iranian Maritime Directorate, Luka Koper said, Slovene Press Agency reports.
The document envisaged the introduction of a direct sea route between Koper and Iranian ports as well as joint promotion on the Slovenian and Iranian markets and exchange of information.
"The Iranian side has shown great interest in cooperation, because North Atlantic ports are too busy and the Adriatic route would save them six days of navigation," the Koper-based company said.
The sea company added that talks on the deal began earlier this year when an Iranian delegation paid a visit to Luka Koper, with both sides wanting to increase trade in Central Asia and the Caspian Sea.
Moreover, Luka CEO Robert Casar and the president of the Iranian sea port Bandar Abbas, Reza Askriz, signed a letter of intent on cooperation between both ports. Concrete deals are expected to follow at their next meeting in 2008 in Slovenia. Casar also met representatives of the biggest Iranian sea company, IRISL, which is also one of the biggest in that part of Asia. (Slovene Press Agency )
