The Army Day was marked yesterday around the country through ceremonies that ended last evening with a torch parade of a detachment from Regiment 30 Guard, from the National Military Circle on Regina Elisabeta Blvd, to Opera Square. The events of yesterday were meant to recall the role of an institution which, in the context of the recent permanent political crises remained a balance and stability factor. The national flag was lifted at all the offices of the military institutions, while the maritime and fluvial military ships were dressed in full panoply. Military and religious ceremonies were held in Bucharest, wreaths of flowers were laid at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier from Carol Park, at the Monument of the Heroes from WW II, from “Carol I” National Defence University. The National Military Museum and the Aviation Museum had the Open Doors Day. A panel of priests performed a commemoration service at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier from Carol Park, which was attended by the Minister of Defence Teodor Melescanu, and where the Speaker of Senate Nicolae Vacaroiu, the former President of Romania Emil Constantinescu, the president and the vice-president of PRM, Corneliu Vadim Tudor and Lucian Bolcas laid wreaths of flowers. The ceremony was attended also by representatives of the presidency, of MIRA, MECT, SRI, SIE, of the Prefecture and City Hall of Bucharest, and also war veterans. Basescu: “We shall further participate to the reconstruction of the countries affected by conflicts” President Traian Basescu thanked the soldiers from the operation theaters, expressed his appreciation for the courage, professionalism and efforts made by them to help those who are affected by the tragedy of war, and requested the Army to adapt to the new security challenges, in a message transmitted yesterday to the armed forces. He expressed his appreciation for the devotion and professionalism with which both the soldiers and the civilian specialists fulfill their missions. The head of the state evidenced in the message the “exemplary way in which the Army has assumed the complex process of reform and transformation,” whose results allowed Romania to acquire the quality of NATO member and the integration with the European Union. President emphasized that, as a member of the Alliance, our country already participates to the substantiation and enforcement of some political and military decisions with a major impact on the international, Euro-Atlantic and regional stability and security. “As we committed ourselves, we shall further participate actively to the democratic reconstruction of the countries affected by bloody conflicts in Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraq, in other regions of the world, being aware that the strategic interests of Romania can be defended not only on the national territory, but frequently also far from the borders of our country,” Basescu transmitted to the Romanian soldiers. Then, he launched an appeal to the Army, asking it “to be open to the society, to be transparent in its decisions, to obtain an extensive support from the citizens, to prepare and to explain the changes,” because “only in this way the Romanians can consider the army an elite corps.” At the end of the message, President paid a homage to the memory of the Romanian soldiers fallen on the battlefields, and also to the war veterans “for whom the duty towards the country represented the supreme obligation.” October 25, the day when the last occupied Romanian territory was liberated in 1944, continues to have the value of a symbol. The Romanian Army is acknowledged the decisive contribution in obtaining the status of member of the Alliance, and our country participates today with around 1,700 soldiers in Iraq, Afghanistan, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Kosovo, and in various missions, among which the Air Police Service from the Baltic countries, and “Active Endeavour” with the frigate “Regele Ferdinand.” Source: Nine O'Clock
