Montenegro Calls for Energy Bids Email a friend Save article Print article Increase text size Decrease text size17 December 2007 Podgorica_ Montenegrio’s Minister for Economic Development and Energy, Branimir Gvozdenovic, has urged Italian businesses to bid for the construction of small hydro-electric power stations in his country.
Gvozdenovic’s call on Monday came three days after the Montenegrin government adopted an energy development strategy that calls for the construction of a second block at the thermal power station in Pljevlja, as well a number of mini-hydro plants on Montenegro’s 43 water courses.
“Several Italian companies that are interested in the realization of this project have already bought the tender documentation”, Gvozdenovic said at a meeting between Italian and Montenegrin business executives, organized in Chamber of Economy of Montenegro.
Construction of the smaller hydro-electric plants is expected to take three years, while completion of the Pljevlja project is planned for 2011.
The energy projects are expected to cost around €2 billion.
Italy is one of Montenegro’s main foreign trade partners.
Trade between the two in the first nine moths of this year amounted to €290 million.
Montenegro’s exports of €137 million were more than matched by its imports at €153 million.
