Climate change discussed in Bartholomeos, Toptan meetingTuesday, October 9, 2007 ANKARA - Anatolia News Agency Parliament Speaker Köksal Toptan met with Greek Orthodox Patriarch Bartholomeos yesterday. Bartholomeos congratulated Toptan on his election as speaker of Parliament. Following their meeting Toptan told the press that the two have previously met during studies carried out on the environment. Bartholomeos, together with scientists and religious clerks, has closely been following issues related to climate change since 1995. The environment isn't important only to us, but to future generations as well. As the Church we try to make people be more sensitive and respectful toward the environment, Bartholomeos said. Bartholomeos said he is pleased to see courses related to the environment incorporated into the school curriculum in Turkey. We included environment, traffic and health courses in the curriculum in order to raise children's awareness on the environment, but the courses were not taken seriously, said Toptan, referring to his term as education minister in 1992. The world faces a serious danger due to climate change, which will cause even greater problems 10-20 years on. It is necessary to take measures right now otherwise this problem cannot be prevented in the future, Toptan said. www.turkishdailynews.com.tr/article.php?enewsid=85532

Bartolomeus, the poor inhabitant of Fener is looking for some popularity. The environment issue is the way to go. It is very hip. Smart but useless move for you baby. Still the message is out there but not in your possession and still nobody cares who you are. You loose it from the beggining- Orthodox Christian... None of the non-orthodox christians care about your position. And majority of the Orthodox ones are following their countries patriarchs.... But he wants to pose hismself as echumenical, whatever is that and gain some popularity. Just another tool in the hands of West... But as long as he feels happy and doesn't make us unhappy about it we don't have problem with that...

This Ecumenical Patriarchate is a very minor, trivial issue if you ask me. Albeit, one that might be annoying at times. Here is a personal offer that the Greeks can't refuse: Turkey allows the establishment of a sovereign, Vatican-type Orthodox city-state in the Fener district in exchange for Greek recognition of Turkish sovereignty over northern Cyprus and the cession to Turkey of the Dodecanese islands and Kastellorizio-Meis. A mutually beneficial deal for both sides. ;D

This may be somewha off-topic, but I was wondering, what is Toptan's lineage? There was a very famous Ottoman-Albanian family with the name Toptani. One of the most famous being Essad Pasha Toptani. Part of this family even made links with the last Sultans family.
I always thought that name Toptani was Albanian since he came from a region of Albania where many surnames started with Top, as far back as the medieval Alb family Topia(Thopia).

Topal-oglu means "son of the lame"?

He is from a province located in the eastern Black Sea coast. As Yeniceri said, his ancestors are from the Caucasus, who most probably immigrated to Turkey in the 1850s or after the 1877-8 Turco-Russian War. He is a very moderate political personality.
