09 April 2008 Pristina _ Kosovo’s President has congratulated Filip Vujanovic in his re-election as Montenegro’s President. The President of Kosovo, Fatmir Sejdiu sent a telegram to his Montenegrin counterpart, Vujanovic upon news of his victory in Sunday’s presidential poll. “Your people have renewed their trust in you, since you have served during a presidential mandate that was important for both your country and Europe,” Sejdiu’s message says. “Kosovo and Montenegro, both newly-independent countries, share more than a friendly border,” it reads, “we share our commitment and aspirations for Euro-Atlantic integrations”. Montenegro, along with Kosovo, were both part of the former Yugoslavia, and the most recent to break off from the old federation. Relations between Kosovo and Montenegro have been relatively good, despite the tensions with Serbia since the end of the 1998-1999 war. However Montenegro has not yet recognised the independence of its neighbouring Kosovo, and the issue became a key election issue, with ethnic Serbs, who make up some 30% of the tiny Adriatic republic’s population vehemently against the move.
