World Briefing | Europe: Moldova: Region Votes To Join Russia By ANDREW E. KRAMER (NYT) Published: September 19, 2006
Voters in Moldova's separatist region, Transnistria, also known as Trans-Dniester, overwhelmingly backed a plan to join Russia. The European Union said it would not recognize the vote. The tiny Russian-speaking territory declared independence from Moldova in 1991 with the support of Russian troops, which have stayed on. Russian officials have suggested that the future of Transnistria and three other separatist regions on the territory of the former Soviet Union -- Abkhazia and South Ossetia in Georgia, and Nagorno-Karabakh, fought over by Armenia and Azerbaijan -- could be decided in plebiscites.
