BOSNIA HAS THE LARGEST OIL DEPOSITS IN EUROPE TUZLA, Bosnia (May 22 ,2008) - Dean of the Faculty of Technology and Mining in the northern Bosnian town of Tuzla, Abdulah Basic, told Bosnian media yesterday that some 500 million tonnes of oil could be located in several locations in the northern Bosnia as well as further in the southern Bosnia in a the depth of between 4,000 and 6,000 metres. His comments were triggered by an incident on May 12, when a man digging a water well in the village of Kadrici near Tuzla, hit a pocket of natural gas. The gas ignited creating a column of fire which according to eyewitnesses was at least 20 metres high.
In the past, local media have occasionally touched upon the possibility of oil deposits under Bosnia. According to several Bosnian experts, British Petroleum, BP and American Oil Company, AMOCO, now also part of BP, were interested in potential oil resources in Bosnia before the 1992-1995 Serbian,Montenegrin and Croatian aggressions against Bosnia.
In cooperation with these two companies, one of the biggest Bosnian construction companies, Energoinvest, carried out a research which proved the existence of oil pools in the northern region of Posavina, as well as in several locations in the south.
Basic says that Energoinvest still has the original report which indicates that Bosnia may have oil resources as big as Saudi Arabia or Iraq.
Yet even after the end of the war, neither the Bosnian government nor international companies showed interest to continue with the research. However this may be changing with the recent skyrocketing of oil and food prices on global markets.
“First barrels of oil from Bosnia could be excavated as soon as the next 15 years, under the condition that local governments have an interest in this,” Basic stated.

It's a well known and proven fact that there are some oil reserves around Konjuh. But they will be suitable for exploitation only in the next 10 to 20 years. As for the southern Bosnia I didn’t know about it till recently.

The oil reserves were reported in HERCEGOVINA, and not in BOSNIA.

Naftno istraživanje u tome dijelu BiH provest æe sigurno ruski struènjaci, jer su Rusi vlasnici Rafinerije Bosanski Brod tvrdi prof. dr.

It seems this oil reserve (if there is any) is in Serb/Croat territory (Herzegovina). I for one would be relieved if there was no oil because it would give the stranci more reason to subjugate us.

If its true, the only people who will benefit will be the corrupt politicians and the mafia, just like in Russia. The people will get sod all, ohh maybe a few more mosques and churches, that should keep them happy. Russia's oligarchs benefited under Yeltsin, under Putin the state gained control over most of the massive oil companies and created something called a "Sovereign Wealth Fund". The funds money has been used to increase development in Russia, develop underdeveloped regions and to pay off debt -- to the point that Russia will soon be debt-free. The people can benefit depends on how the profits are strucured. I think it might will most likely take 10 years before such a fund can be set-up by Bosnia due to the fact that private weastern firms will build the infrastrucute, it could occur sooner if Bosnia exploits the current urgency the west seeks for oil.

It's a well known and proven fact that there are some oil reserves around Konjuh. But they will be suitable for exploitation only in the next 10 to 20 years. As for the southern Bosnia I didn’t know about it till recently. ^ There's a deposit in RS also, I read about it on balkanalysis.com in 2004. Except Slovenia & FYROM all ex-YU republic have some kind of oil deposits. Montenegro has three small off-shore deposits that have a licence holder for exploit, there is also a larger deposit for which there is no licence holders. Near Istria three small deposits were discovered in the 80s and there were plans to exploit them. There is a small on-shore oil field in Lika & likely more oil fields in Croatia's Adriatic coast. Vojvodina has Tu;arije field discovered in late 80s, some estimates say it has enough oil to supply Serbia's need for afew decades. There are also some sights south of the Danube in Serbia. The ex-YU states have oil, they just have corrupt or stupid officials who don't use this resource. Btw. 500 million tonnes is about 3.15 billion barrels of oil, or enough the world for 30-40 days.

Why is there a poll on this?
Is anyone here a qualified geologist specializing in oil deposits?
