The Croatian national handball team got through to the European championship’s final by defeating France 24-23
The Croatian national handball team got through to the European championship’s final in Norway by defeating France 24-23.
Differently from previous matches, the Croatians opened the game very well, and did not stop for a moment. As expected it was a match with few goals and long actions in attack. Both teams’ defences worked very well, and despite quite movements there were no open spaces. The very beginning announced the revival of Croatia’s side lines, and especially of captain Pero Metlicic who finally returned to his optimal form. The French immediately missed a penalty, and when Croatia’s turn came, Domagoj Duvnjak did not fail. Croatia had occasions to get three points ahead all through the first part of the first half, and reached the target in the 26th minute. However the first half ended 11-9.
Croatia started the second half in a similar mood and brought the result up to 13-10. The French struggling manage to return in the game in the 39th minute, and three minutes later the gained advantage for the first time in the whole game. The referees did a good job the whole time. In the last 10 minutes Croatia spent 5 minutes without scoring and France managed to bring the result to 21-19 in their favour.
In the last two minutes, Karabatic turned the situation over. The Croatians had a long attack and, at 40 seconds before the end, Croatia gained advantage again. Despite playing with a player more, France did no manage to pass Somic’s goal, and celebrations started in Lilehammer.
