MP:Will Minister Attack Tito-Subasic Govt As Well?
Before the Parliamentary discussion touched on various cabinets from the 20th century, Sanader and Suker presented the 2008 budget.
ZAGREB, CROATIA - This week`s first Parliament sitting began with the cabinet and the opposition`s affrayment. After Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader and Finance Minister Ivan Suker presented the 2008 Budget to the MPs, Croatian People`s Party member (HNS) Goran Beus accused Suker.
Beus, who lives in Velika Gorica, just like Suker, accused the minister of involvement with the existence of 30 illegal gravel pits, some of which are located in Velika Gorica. But before he switched the discussion topic to the “unreasonable decision” of Racan`s coalition government, in his words, Suker told Beus that the “Velika Gorica gravel pits have financed the work of HNS for years”. The finance minister then looked back on the actions of the 2001 government.
Seks: Better Tito-Subasic than Cvetkovic-Macek
- They`ve cut back salaries, they did not pay police officers, supplements were not paid out for children of civil servants and benefits were not paid out for Croatian defenders – Suker said. Social Democratic Party (SDP) member Nenad Stazic replied immediately:
- Suker is now accusing Racan, will he attack the Tito-Subasic cabinet by the end of his mandate? – Stazic wondered. Parliament vice president and Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) member Vladimir Seks defended his party colleague.
- Better Tito-Subasic than Cvetkovic-Macek -. Stazic`s remark was completed by his party colleague Ingrid Anticevic-Marinovic who “suggested” that the government could refer to “the Turks who were the scapegoats for everything that went wrong in the good old Yugoslav system”.
Kajin: Enough of giving away budget sweets to HDZ and HSS
Istrian Democratic Assembly (IDS) member Damir Kajin then addressed the MPs:
- Don`t give away budget sweets to your own only, to the Croatian Democratic Union [HDZ], the Croatian Peasants` Party [HSS] and the rest, they are not the only citizens of this country and not the only ones filling the state budget – Kajin said, adding that a pause needs to be made in practice and that some parts are being crashed and broken, just like that bone breaker who broke Eduardo in England.
Sanader: Unemployment will be down to 7 percent
The arrayment between the position and the opposition was preceded by the presentation of the budget for 2008, according to which the state income would amount to 115.6 billion kuna while expenditures would reach the amount of 119.4 billion kuna. Prime Minister Sanader pointed out the 2008 budget will remain developing budget and that there will be no cancellations of bankruptcy law for the users.
- The cabinet will maintain its course in the upcoming period towards a high level of competitiveness of the Croatian economy which will bring Croatia closer to European partners – Sanader pointed out. He looked back on inflation, food prices and repeated that the problem is that the population is growing and it is not accompanied by the rise of food production.

The prime minister said food prices which we are accustomed to will never be the same again and that the rise of energy generating product prices is linked with the food inflation.
In order to maintain macroeconomic stability, Sanader touched on the Croatian National Bank, which can affect the macroeconomic situation.
- We managed to maintain macroeconomic stability during the war, during Nikica Valentic`s government, if we managed to sustain it then, there is no doubt that we can do it now – Sanader said.
Suker: Let local self-administrations decrease the prices of unity services
The premier expressed expectations of the GDP increasing, which should be somewhere between 4 and 4.5 percent in 2008, according to Sanader. Also, he pointed out that unemployment is down by 38,000 in a year, amounting to an unemployment rate of around 8.4 percent.
- The government`s goal is to bring down unemployment to the level of 7 percent in the next two to three years – the PM said, adding that the emphasis of the state budget is on the jurisdiction reform, fight against corruption and creation of Croatia as society of knowledge.
Thus, the plan is to single out 933 million kuna this year for science, education and sports, amounting to an increase of 8.7 percent in relation to the previous year.
Finance Minister Ivan Suker added that the cabinet`s plan is to decrease the state`s expenses and he repeated that the government will thus send a clear message that it is limiting consumption. Suker invited units of local self-administration not to get into debt and to decrease the prices of utility services, as they influence the economy.
Sanader: I expect the EP resolution these days, favourable for Croatia
The prime minister pointed out that Croatia is close to ending negotiations on entering the European Union and close to being received into NATO.
- I expect these facts will have a positive reflection on the rise of the Croatian economy, especially through bigger foreign and home investments – Sanader pointed out, adding that the cabinet will do everything to end negotiations with the EU in the first half of 2009. He also said he expects the European Parliament to pass a resolution these days, favourable for Croatia.
- Croatian membership in the EU is enticing for the EU and for the south-east of Europe as well – Sanader concluded.
