Tirana advised before EU bidDuring a visit to Tirana yesterday, Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis called on Albania to ensure that the country’s parliamentary elections are trouble-free ahead of the Balkan state’s bid to join the European Union. Speaking in the neighboring country’s parliament a day before Albania officially submits a request to join the EU, Karamanlis said that the June poll had to be carried out “in accordance with international standards” and with “respect to human and minority rights.” The Greek premier repeated the message to his Albanian counterpart Sali Berisha during their meeting, underlining the EU’s concern about corruption and violence possibly marring the election. The leaders signed an agreement delineating the continental shelf and sea borders in the Ionian Sea and praised relations between the two countries. Karamanlis also held an unofficial meeting with representatives of the ethnic Greek community. www.ekathimerini.com/4dcgi/_w_articles_politics_100010_28/04/2009_106669

AI cracks 4000-year-old mysteryAn ancient script that’s defied generations of archaeologists has yielded some of its secrets to artificially intelligent computers. Computational analysis of symbols used 4,000 years ago by a long-lost Indus Valley civilization suggests they represent a spoken language. Some frustrated linguists thought the symbols were merely pretty pictures. "The underlying grammatical structure seems similar to what’s found in many languages," said University of Washington computer scientist Rajesh Rao. The Indus script, used between 2,600 and 1,900 B.C. in what is now eastern Pakistan and northwest India, belonged to a civilization as sophisticated as its Mesopotamian and Egyptian contemporaries. However, it left fewer linguistic remains. Archaeologists have uncovered about 1,500 unique inscriptions from fragments of pottery, tablets and seals. The longest inscription is just 27 signs long. In 1877, British archaeologist Alexander Cunningham hypothesized that the Indus script was a forerunner of modern-day Brahmic scripts, used from Central to Southeast Asia. Other researchers disagreed. Fueled by scores of competing and ultimately unsuccessful attempts to decipher the script, that contentious state of affairs has persisted to the present. Among the languages linked to the mysterious script are Chinese Lolo, Sumerian, Egyptian, Dravidian, Indo-Aryan, Old Slavic, even Easter Island — and, finally, no language at all. In 2004, linguist Steve Farmer published a paper asserting that the Indus script was nothing more than political and religious symbols. It was a controversial notion, but not an unpopular one. Rao, a machine learning specialist who read about the Indus script in high school and decided to apply his expertise to the script while on sabbatical in Inda, may have solved the language-versus-symbol question, if not the script itself. "One of the main questions in machine learning is how to generalize rules from a limited amount of data," said Rao. "Even though we can’t read it, we can look at the patterns and get the underlying grammatical structure." Rao’s team used pattern-analyzing software running what’s known as a Markov model, a computational tool used to map system dynamics. They fed the program sequences of four spoken languages: ancient Sumerian, Sanskrit and Old Tamil, as well as modern English. Then they gave it samples of four non-spoken communication systems: human DNA, Fortran, bacterial protein sequences and an artificial language. The program calculated the level of order present in each language. Non-spoken languages were either highly ordered, with symbols and structures following each other in unvarying ways, or utterly chaotic. Spoken languages fell in the middle. When they seeded the program with fragments of Indus script, it returned with grammatical rules based on patterns of symbol arrangement. These proved to be moderately ordered, just like spoken languages. As for the meaning of the script, the program remained silent. "It’s a useful paper," said University of Helsinki archaeologist Asko Parpola, an authority on Indus scripts, "but it doesn’t really further our understanding of the script." Parpola said the primary obstacle confronting decipherers of fragmentary Indus scripts — the difficulty of testing their hypotheses — remains unchanged. But according to Rao, this early analysis provides a foundation for a more comprehensive understanding of Indus script grammar, and ultimately its meaning. "The next step is to create a grammar from the data that we have," he said. "Then we can ask, is this grammar similar to those of the Sanskrit or Indo-European or Dravidian languages? This will give us a language to compare it to." "It’s only recently that archaeologists have started to apply computational approaches in a rigid manner," said Rao. "The time is ripe." There is no doupt that ancient Macedonians were Greek. It is thoroughly proved by historic documents and archaeological discoveries which can be found in history books and museums in Greece and arround the world. The most important archeological discovery in Macedonia is the tomb of King Philippos II. It was excavated in Vergina, Greece in 1978 and it proves beyond any doubt the Greekness of ancient Macedonia. All the findings are characteristic of the Greek culture and all the inscriptions are written using the Greek language. Among the discoveries of this tomb is the "Vergina sun" the symbol that FYROM attempted to use on its flag initially.
Facts which prove that ancient Macedonians were Greek people:
Macedonians spoke a dialect of the Greek language All the monuments and inscriptions found in the Macedonia are written using the Greek language. Take a look at the archaeological discoveries. There is no historic evidence to suggest that the Macedonians were using a different language.
Macedonians had Greek names All the ancient Macedonian names mentioned in history or found on tombs are Greek. All the kings of Ancient Macedonia had Greek names. Nobody discovered ancient Macedonian names ending to -ov or -ovski or whatever.
Alexander's name is Greek. The word "Alexandros" is produced from the prefix alex(=protector) and the word andros(=man) meaning "he who protects men". The prefix "alex" can be found in many Greek words today (alexiptoto=parachute, alexisfairo=bulletproof - all these words have the meaning of protetion).
Philip's name is also Greek. It is produced from the prefix Philo(=friendly to something) and the word ippos(=horse) meaning the man who is friendly to horses. The prefix "philo" and the word "ippos" are also found in many words of Greek origin today (philosophy, philology, hippodrome, hippocampus). A detailed list of ancient Macedonian names can be found here.
The regions of ancient Macedonia had Greek names. The regions which formed ancient Macedonia had Greek names. Most of these names are used in Greece even today.
Macedonian architecture was similar to the Greek architecture. All the buldings found in the Macedonia region have many common characteristics with the ones found in the rest of Greece. Palaces, temples, theaters markets are characteristic sampes of ancient Greek architecture.
Macedonians fought together with the rest of the Greeks. Macedonians always fought along with the other Greek city-states against enemies from Asia.
Macedonians took part in the Olympic games. It is well known then ONLY Greeks were allowed to take part in the ancient Olympic games. For a list of Macedonians who participated in the Olympic Games.
Macedonians celebrated the same festivals as the rest of the Greeks. Examples of festivals which were celebrated in Macedonia as well as in other Greek states are the "Hetaireidia", the "Apellaia" and many more.
Macedonians worshiped the same Gods as the rest of the Greeks. Several temples dedicated to the Greek Gods have beem discovered in Macedonia and especially in Dion the religious center of ancient Macedonians. It is obvious that the Macedonias worshiped the 12 Olympian Gods as the rest of the Greeks. The Gods were "living" on Mount Olympos which happens to be located in Macedonia.
How would that be possible if there was hostility between Macedonians and Greeks?
This is another proof that Macedonia was considered a part of Greece.
FYROM's residents have no historical cultural or linguistic ties with ancient Macedonia. The heart of ancient Macedonia was not in the teritory which FYROM occupies but in the Greek part of Macedonia were all the major archaeological discoveries took place.
The name "Republic of Macedonia implies a teritorial threat against Greece and other countries and it creates a great risk of renewed ethnic conflict in the Balkans.

I’ve figured out his drama.... Superiority complex refers to a subconscious neurotic mechanism of compensation developed by the individual as a result of feelings of inferiority.[1] The feelings of inferiority in this specific complex are often brought on by real or perceived social rejection. The term was coined by Alfred Adler (February 7, 1870 – May 28, 1937), as part of his School of Individual psychology. The term "superiority complex", in everyday usage, refers to an overly high opinion of oneself; in psychology, it refers to the same sort of attitude. However in psychology, it is considered that the attitude is actually a way of hiding (or compensating for) feelings of inferiority.[citation needed] The term was introduced by psychologist Alfred Adler in a series of books, including "Understanding Human Nature" and "Social Interest".
Those exhibiting the superiority complex commonly project their feelings of inferiority onto others whom they perceive as lessers, possibly for the same reasons for which they themselves may have been ostracized. Accusations of arrogance and c**kiness can be made by others when referring to an individual exhibiting a superiority complex.[citation needed]
Behaviors related to this mechanism may include an exaggeratedly positive opinion of one’s worth and abilities, unrealistically high expectations in goals and achievements for oneself and others, persistent attempts to correct others (regardless of whether or not they are actually correct), vanity, extravagant dressing (intent on drawing attention), excessive need for competition, pride, over-sentimentality and affected exaltation, snobbishness, a tendency to discredit others' opinions and over-forcefulness aimed at dominating those considered as weaker or less important.[2]
Both the superiority and inferiority complex can be found together as different expressions of the same pathology and both complexes can exist within the same individual.[citation needed]en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superiority_complex.

Bitter ? When watching my neighbours living in the shadows of Greece, why should I be ? ;D Regarding Slavic....This is interesting...Albanized Serbs The British renowned historian Harold Temperly had clearly pointed out that “the Mussulmanised Serbs, known as Arnauts, are the bitterest foes of the Serb”. Temperley was professor in Oxford and Cambridge, and in 1921, he was British representative in the Committee for the Albanian Borders. Numerous European authors and travel writers had recorded the process of gradual ethnic cleansing of Serbs from Old Serbia (Joseph Muller, Alexandar Gilferding, Victor Berar, Ivan B. Iastrebov and others). The ethnic cleansing of the Serbs intensified particularly after the establishment of the Albanian League in Prizren in 1878, which had openly proclaimed the creation of the Great Albania as its main goal. The renowned European historian Konstantin Jirecek claimed that in the period 1878-1912 about 150,000 Orthodox Serbs were moved from Old Serbia to the central parts of the present Serbia (which had been the Kingdom of Serbia at that time. In spite of a massive violent oppression of the Serbs and their exodus from Kosovo and Metohija, the ratio of Serbs – Orthodox and Moslems and Albanians – mostly Moslems, was 50:50 hundred years ago. This process had been emphasized convincingly by H.N. Brailsford in his book “Macedonia”, written in 1905. He even stated that the Albanians “manifest a semi-feudal terrorism” towards the Slavs. The Austro-Hungarian Monarchy had also supported the penetration of Albanians into the Old Serbia at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. The British researcher Laffan had noted: “The number of Albanians in Old Serbia was increasing, as they were supported and encouraged by Austria”. One should look at the ethnic map of Serbia which had been published in London in 1909 by Alfred Stead, showing that there were only a few ethnic Albanians in Kosovo and Metohija, and that most of them were “Albanized Serbs”.[/u] Besides numerous Russian, French and other sources, this process had been treated in English diplomatic papers too. For example, Sir John Banham wrote to the marquis of Lansdown on May 7, 1901, that 40 Serbian families were obliged to emigrate to the Kingdom of Serbia due to the Albanian terror. Another English diplomat, Mr. Young, wrote to the marquis of Lansdown on September 9, 1901: “The Old Servia is still an area of disturbance owing to the lawlessness, vendettas and racial jealousies of the Albanians”. Young added in the same report that the oppression of the Serbian population continues and that 600 Albanians, with the help of 50 Turkish soldiers, “had reduced a village of 60 households to one quarter of that number”. Young’s report of December 1901 states that the Albanian terror from the spring to December resulted in the expulsion of 250 Serbian families to the Kingdom of Serbia.Since the northern Albs maybe Muslim Serbs ? Isn’t it possible for the southern Albs to be Muslim Greeks and other ? It would explain for the Albs sudden recent appearance in the Balkans at the same time the Ottomans arrival. Can't think of a more natural explanation...

It’s a good idea to re-name the RoM forum to F.y.r.o.m short for Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia or simply in Slavic or Bulgarian as Makedonija Forum. There is no such term in the U.N country listings as RoM but as F.Y.R.O.M name still pending with Greece. The word Macedonia is a Greek word, Macedonians have always written, spoken Greek and spread the Hellenic way of life.
I doubt it’s a big ask now for realism here...Nice new look !

Two Greek blokes show London what "humour" used to beBy John Kaponi For those of us who have endured the Harry Enfield "Stavros" character in the 1990s with people thinking it funny that some middle class English bloke should mimic a Cypriot kebab shop owner and the continual "hello everybody pips", we now have the antidote. Two Greek-Cypriots Demetri and Laki who are taking the “mick” out of themselves and at the same time making a contribution to the debate over the role of Greeks in the UK. The Greek community is one of the success stories in London's "immigrant" population, doing well in business, the public sector and making a valuable contribution (if not limited) to the politics of London. But it took a father and son from the north London Greek "ghettos" of Winchmore Hill to reflect the way in which the Greeks of London have just got on with their business. Indeed it is ironic that on the day of the Greek Orthodox Good Friday so much press attention should be focused on these two characters. The "Stavros Flatley" act which was an immediate hit with the majority of those who watched it, reflected the sense of humour that exists within the Greek psyche, and also a demonstration of how the so called "mainstream" in the capital is so out of touch with London's grassroots. In comparison in the United States, stand up comics regularly discuss race and religion and have huge followings. Here we have pseudo-academic middle class graduates doing a stand up routine trying to not "offend" and keep within the unwritten "red-lines" of race and religion. In effect killing off the comedic critique that Jackie Mason has used when debating his Jewishness, Russell Peters act on his Indian heritage, Chris Rock on his experiences as a black man in the US and others. We seem to have a problem having this kind of comedy in the UK. What the father and son act aka "Stavros Flatley" have managed to do is to reawaken the old tradition of comedy that used to exist in abundance in the UK of mimicking ones heritage but in so doing making it stronger and self-confident. Many Greeks in London will confess to stories about ones superstitions, beliefs and customs, I bet most Londoners walk left foot forward? Well if your a Greek like me it’s been instilled to the point of delirium "you must walk with the right foot first" in case of some evil spirit being invoked! Heard the one about not having a bath on Fridays? Yes we Greeks pong on Fridays! We are so absorbed today in London about offending minorities and being branded racist; well for one I am happy that Demetri and Laki have done so well. Good on you fellas! And in these times of recession, what a better way to forget than to watch two Greeks blokes dancing on stage! Dnevnik, Macedonia: Rufi Osmani calls for constitutional amendment21 April 2009 | 11:21 | FOCUS News Agency Skopje. After the local election win in the municipality of Gostivar Rufi Osmani returns to politics, Macedonian Dnevnik daily writes. In an interview with the newspaper Osmani notes that he returns with a proposal for a new agreement, which says that Macedonia should be established as a country of the Macedonian and Albanian peoples. The daily comments that although the call for constitutional amendment will trigger public reactions, he says he is patient and certain that after some time the new agreement will be feasible. He thinks the public wants the final closure of the issue. “The Albanian people in Macedonia has an interim status, a status between a national minority and a constituent people. I would say a status of nationality. That is why we aim at a new agreement, which will state that Macedonia is a state of Macedonians and Albanians. The idea is that the rights and obligations at a collective level have to be one and the same and thus the issue will be closed. The idea is to set up central institutions that will put opportunities, rights and obligations on one and the same level. Ohrid Framework Agreement is definitely a transitional solution, which is already expiring. The new agreement that would be worked out for a new establishment will be democratic and based on a wide consensus – civil, national and interethnic,” Osmani says. www.focus-fen.net/index.php?id=n178501
