I will be moving to Serbia with my wife who is Serbian in November 2005, and I have just been told by customs by a very rude person that we will have to pay tax on all our household belongings regardless of how old they are. This just can't be true. Does anyone know anything about this, if so do you know if there is any way around it? I mean how are they going to charge on items that might be 5, 10 or 15 years old. We are NOT taking a car with us. Advice or a comment would be appreciated.

Hmm, Try and get a second opinion from someone else. Citizens advice bureau etc.
Are you returning to the UK??? If not then surely they should not tax you...
Besides if you've paid tax on an item already then there should be no problem. If you are not exporting the items for profit then you should not have to pay tax. Ring back customs and request to speak to the head honcho. If he gives you the same crap, then notify the newspapers! They'd probably love to name and shame the customs boys. Especially as they aint flavour of month right now!
