Are Moldovians to Romania what Kosovars are to Albania? I don't want to start a heated political discussion, just curious.

The so called "Republic of Moldova" was part of Romania and was called Bessarabia until 1940 when the USSR annexed it. That's one of the reasons why Romania joined the Axis during the second world war and faught against the USSR.
After the defeat of Germany, Bessarabia (the "Republic of Moldova") was reannexed to the USSR and hundreds of thousand of Romanians were deported to Siberia while Russian colonists settled in Bessarabia.
Here is some nice footage from those times:
Russians invade and annex Bessarabia, Romanians flee from the barbaric Russian hordes.
Romanians retake Bessarabia
Romanians troops march into Bessarabia and Odessa (Ukraine)
A video showing some statistics with the deported Romanians.
So yeah, "Moldovans" are Romanians.
PS: Here's a video I like very much. Dedicated to the Romanian soldiers of WWII
