Montenegro Trade Deficit Nears €1 Billion Email a friend Save article Print article Increase text size Decrease text size 08 September 2008 Podgorica _ Montenegro’s national Statistics Office reports that the country’s trade deficit has reached €947.4 million.
While the country imported goods to the tune of €1.18 billion in the first half of this year, Montenegro’s exports were just €236.5 million – resulting in a massive trade deficit of €947.4 million.
The country still imports most of its goods from Serbia, with which it was in a loose union, until a referendum in 2006 saw Podgorica declare independence.
The country’s main exports are aluminium and tourism but both of these heavily rely on imports, particularly in the case of tourism, where foreign semi-skilled or skilled labour are brought into this small Adriatic state of 700,000 people.
