Antun Vrdoljak, a Croatian director, will start shooting the TV series about Josip Broz Tito next week. According to the Croatian media, the project will cost at least million Euros. Vrdoljak plans to make a feature-length film out of six episodes, but it is still not known who will play the role of Tito.
“I am very nervous when I am shooting the film and I don’t like publicity. Directing a film is a very difficult job and you never know what will come of it and whether it will be good or bad. That is the reason why there is no access for the media during the shooting,” Antun Vrdoljak said for “Vecernji list” from Zagreb.
He did not want to disclose which actors will play in the series produced by HRT, but he confirmed that Goran Visnjic, famous for his role in an American TV series “ER”, will appear as a narrator.
Antun Vrdoljak says that during the preparations, they mostly had problems with finding locations for shooting, for example of the places describing Tito’s stay in Moscow, Kumrovec from 1990…
Upon the first announcement of shooting of this film about Tito two yearsago, members of the Broz family publicly expressed disapproval, because they thought that Vrdoljak would not be objective.
“Vrdoljak is the last person who should shoot this film about my grandfather, because he said that he drank champagne when he heard news about Tito’s death. My family and me find that insulting and doubt the objectivity of such film,” said Tito’s granddaughter Sasa Broz last year.
“I don’t have right to like or dislike someone, not even Tito. There will not be a single sentence in this film that was not supported by the most reliable documents. Tito will be described by historians and his staunch supporters, as well as by those who were critical of his reign… Historical persons are what they are, and what happened cannot be denied-nobody can be proud of Bleiburg or Goli Otok. However, our life in Tito’s time was better than in, for example, Hungary or Poland and many other countries,” Vrdoljak explained.
