Serbia Government is dangerously close to fall. Even if it survives the latest crisis, the reconstruction of the cabinet is very possible, ‘Blic’ sources from the Government claims. Everything is going to depend on Tadic-Kostunica meeting announced for yesterday evening.
As of yesterday the Government has been in the most serious crisis since its setting up due to Prime Minister Kostunica’s request for urgent session of Serbia Parliament that would reject the political agreement offered to Serbia by the EU.
‘The EU proposal to sign a political agreement with Serbia while at the same time the EU is sending its mission to dismember our country, represents a deceit aimed that Serbia by setting its signature on the agreement actually signs consent for Kosovo independence and becomes the first country to recognize independent Kosovo indirectly’, Kostunica’s statement reads.
DS replies that the Prime Minister is forgetting that 2.3 million people voted for the European future of the country. Should DS keep on insisting on its stance and Kostunica on his ‘either Kosovo or the EU’ stance, it may easily happen that the Government falls. In that case Kostunica may call on the radicals and socialists to join the government of national unity or to support his minority (DSS-NS) government. If not, there is no other alternative but early parliamentary election.
After Sunday’s presidential runoff won by Tadic, Kostunica is aware that he does not have the majority in the Government and that is why seeking decision is made in the Parliament. However, Serbia Parliament Speaker Oliver Dulic is not ready to schedule the session before February 7 when Serbia could sign the political agreement with the EU. Dulic said that the political agreement would be in force only if Serbia Government authorizes some of the ministers to sign that document. He also says that the political agreement need not be ratified by the Parliament unlike the SAA.
‘Fight’ at Foreign policy board
The problem is that Serbia Deputy Premier does not have Government’s consent to sign the agreement. The Government cannot meet since the Prime Minister refuses to call the session. Even if a session is called the Prime Minister shall not put political agreement on agenda. The DS ministers would then request putting of the political agreement on agenda… This same scenario actually happened during the meeting of the Government’s Foreign policy board at which the ministers of DS and DSS conflicted. Namely, the agreement was first to pass that board to be eventually put on the Government session’s agenda.
Minister for Kosovo and Metohija Slobodan Samardzic, outvoted by three DS ministers supporting putting of the agreement on agenda, left the meeting. Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic undertook chairing the meeting and continued it. The meeting was interrupted later on and was expected to resume yesterday evening.
That is why DSS-NS coalition attempted a ‘breakthrough’ via the Parliament. Prime Minister’s request for extraordinary parliament session has been met and DSS-NS caucus (45 deputies) started collecting 84 required signatures for the initiative to be launched.
‘Until so far we have got positive reply from the socialists and radicals so I expect the initiative to be launched with the Parliament Speaker tomorrow morning’, NS official said for ‘Blic’.
