^ All in all for the USAF, there is around 6,000+ Air Combat Vehicles. I'll find the numbers as soon as I can. Ballpark: www.af.mil/

^ Yeah it does. The USAF/USN(NWSAC) is getting a reduction in its size that is to be completed by 2013 (Hence the retirement of the Tomcat).

I live right next to a USN Naval Air Station, that has an F-18 Squadron, every other week they are up and about making a lot of noise. (Used to be home of the blue Angels) There is also a ASW squadron There is also a Air National Guard F-15 squadron at the International Airport, as part of the Homeland Security program.
F-14 was a old work horse, but What I find interesting is the claim that the F-22 is to replace the f-15, but only 180 are to be built while the f-15 fleet has over 800 aircraft. Are we to see such a substantial reduction in the fleet? The f-35 will replace the f-16, F-18 and the AV-8B Harrier so I assume it will be built it much larger numbers.

Well I haven't hear of any reorganization plans to any US Armed Forces branches, other than the Army and Marine Corps regarding the infantry (90.7 Billion Dollars to recruit 547,400 members by 2013). The Department of Defense will get something through the new president for sure.
Do you live by Jacksonville?

When one looks at the army today on paper it looks impressive until one considers that only a fraction of that force are actual combat troops. With two massive deployments and continuous insurgency engagement with a peace time army, I'm amazed they made it this far without calling up all reserves. I'm pretty sure there won’t be any fall back on conscription, but they need to sweeten the sign up bonus and combat pay a helluva higher if they want to increase the number of combat brigades.
"Do you live by Jacksonville? "
Yep, right smack in the middle of this swamp.

Used to know three pilots there. They've all been stationed in the Persian Gulf since the start of the Iraq War. Two of them have transferred over from CVN-74 to CVN-70 (Due to the Iraqi War, and the retirement of the Tomcat), and one of them retired.

They guys I know used to fly F-14's, but now fly F/A-18E/F's for carrier ops. in the Persian Gulf. I think one of them is still down there, and one is back in the US. Have to check up on that. But last I heard he wanted to go to Miramar to become an NSAWC/NFWS SFIT as an T-38 (F-5F) Aggressor instructor.

LOL! It was a good aircraft, very effective, and not a bad service record at that. Yugoslavia should have acquired 24 for Costal and Maritime Air Defense. If Iran could have done it why not Yugo. But, all in all, the Tomcat should have made a re-emergence. Grumman had an upgrade ready for the aircraft (The F-14E/F Tomcats), but it wasn't meant to be as the USN didn't want such a versatile inventory.

Huh, thinking about it now, I don't know, but a Mi-8 or Gazelle pilot would have been so cool to be, but, as I said...ta vremena su prosla..jebiga... What do you think that the Gazelle and Mi-8 would have been replaced with, had Juga not collapsed? anyways, one comes acros some intresting stuff on this www.mycity-military.com/Vojno-tehnicka-dostignuca/forum

"Yeah. I'd have surely gone into the JRV. "
I would have probably folowd my dad into the army as career officer.
You would have had a blast, if the country had survived you would surly have flown the sweet looking novi avijon interceptor.

I think based on the experience of building the Gazelle, the domestic industry would have opted to developed a indigenous helicopter design, versatile enough to be used both for utility, ASW, and as a gunship platform. For trainer craft and ground attack the aircraft industry was already fully indigenous, and the Novi Avijon would have meant that interceptors would also be indigenous leaving the Yugoslav Air Force with all domestic equipment by the 2000s. (Except medium/heavy cargo/troop lift)

^ Ahh yes! The Novi Avion (Dubbed as the L-31 Supersonik, where the L stands for Lovac). Any of you guys know the JRV designations for MiG-21's and MiG-29's? Sure would have been sweet.
But on the question on what the Gazelle and Mi-8 would have been replaced with, I think Mi-35's (Or even maybe Mi-28's) for the Gazelle, and the Mi-171 for the Mi-8. All choppers decked out in the latest tech. *That's given the fact that shit rolled out as it did around the world, and Yugoslavia has a smooth shift from Communism to Parliamentary Democracy aka No Nationalism*
