Schoolgirl bashed by gang of 15 students
STUDENT Angela Stankovic and her mother, Danijela, left their troubled homeland of Serbia seeking "a better life" in Australia.
Today they are nursing their wounds after a terrifying attack by a gang of male and female school bullies who allegedly ambushed them at a Gold Coast bus stop as other students recorded the incident on phone cameras.
Angela "celebrated" her 15th birthday yesterday in a neck brace and barely able to move after the bashing, which happened only three weeks after she moved schools because of constant bullying, and even death-threats, by an ex-schoolmate and her friends.
She was allegedly set upon by a group of about 15 students who punched her and kicked her as she cowered on the ground at a Nerang bus stop on Monday afternoon.
Her mother, who had driven to the bus stop to pick up her frightened daughter, was also allegedly viciously attacked as she tried to protect Angela.
"It was terrifying," a bruised and badly shaken Angela said yesterday.
"They were all surrounding the bus. I ran for mum's car and that's when they started running after me and swearing at me and saying I should go back to my own country.
"I was half in the car and (a girl) hit me in the face.
"I was on the ground being kicked and scratched and that's when mum jumped in."
A traumatised Mrs Stankovic said: "I was trying to protect her but it was 15 against two. It was unbelievable, they were crazy."
Angela, who weighs 43kg, was taken to hospital with head, neck and back injuries and a suspected broken nose. Her mother also needed hospital treatment for a badly sprained wrist.
Angela's mobile phone was stolen and her mother's car damaged.
Angela said she moved from Nerang State High School to Pacific Pines State High three weeks ago after being stalked and bullied for more than 12 months by another female student and her friends.
Police yesterday raided Nerang State High looking for evidence and are seizing mobile phone footage from students.
Yesterday afternoon they charged a 16-year-old girl with three counts of assault causing bodily harm, robbery and wilful damage.
She is expected to face Southport Children's Court today.
