Average family spends 40 pct of income on food 13 May 2008 | 10:50 | Source: Tanjug BELGRADE -- The average family of three in Serbia spends over 40 percent of its income on food and beverages, a new report shows. The figure is indicative of the low standard of living in the country, Market Research Institute (IZIT) associate Saša Ðogoviæ said Monday. If housing expenses and utility bills are added, the percentage is at 55, he said. The average net income in Serbia cannot cover the cost of the standard basket of consumer goods, and cannot cover even the minimum living expenses, according to IZIT figures for February. The average net salary in Serbia in March was RSD 30,800, 2.1 pct less than in February and 13.2 pct less than in December 2007, IZIT said. Retail prices were up by 1.1 pct in April compared to March. www.b92.net/eng/news/business-article.php?yyyy=2008&mm=05&dd=13&nav_id=50201

The average Canadian family spends 36% of its income on food, clothing and housing. That is lower than the 55% in Serbia. However, the average Canadian family also spends 45% on taxes. I am sure the average Serbian family spends a lot less there.

Before 2004 the tax were about 70% in Serbia, now it's gone down alot since then -- from highest to lowest in Europe (the only could action done by G-17+).

A big problem in Serbia is that the tax collection system is not respected and doesn't have enough teeth. Try avoiding the payment of taxes or the claiming of purchases in any Western countries and you risk a jail sentence. In Serbia that can be achieved far too easily. We gained freedom from the Turks 200 years ago, but haven't done enough to free ourselves of their mentality.

During the the 2007 parliamentary elections tghe Radicals were saying that they would throw tax evaders in jail. I think that was just populsim -- no party in Serbia has the guts to do anything about the situation. They said that Serbia only collected some 80% of taxes at best, 60% at worse.

And Marko, take into account that your neighbors are albania, bulgaria, romania and greece and you will understand some things. Serbia cant instantly grow wings and fly away from the balkans...

Which is why Deucaonism works. No need to worry about taxes!
